Today, MHP Group agreed a partnership with the Medical Journalists’ Association (MJA) to become the only communications, marketing and policy agency partner, that can work with the MJA to offer their members exclusive on- and off-the-record media briefings (both in-person and virtual). But what is the Medical Journalists’ Association? The MJA, which was founded in 1967, has over 450 members including writers, broadcasters and editors from renowned outlets such as the BBC, British Medical Journal, Nature and The Financial Times. It exists to promote excellence in journalism and support its members with opportunities for professional growth and networking. Shaun Lintern, Health Editor of The Sunday Times and Chair of the Medical Journalists’ Association, explains more in the video below! #MHPGroup #HealthcareCommunications #HealthJournalism

The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) has made a significant policy change that will provide physician-focused lay media with early access to NEJM articles. This is a welcome development, as it will allow the public to gain access to high-quality evidence-based information more easily. As a medical professional, I have often been frustrated by the limited access that laypeople have to tools like NEJM and UPTODATE, which are restricted mostly to providers. Unfortunately, this has allowed fake experts to spread misinformation and confusion. I believe that this policy change will help to improve public health outcomes by providing more accurate and reliable information to the public. We have to do a better job of competing with misinformation. This is one way to do that.

As a freelance, being an MJA member has been particularly useful in making important connections.
If you want to connect with the UK's leading health and medical journalists, there is no better way than connecting with the Medical Journalists' Association. Our membership of around 450 includes leading journalists from the nationals, broadcast, specialist and trade media and, of course, the freelancers who are the lifeblood of so much journalism today. Chatting after the recent #MJAAwards, my co vice-chair Emma Wilkinson explains what makes the MJA and our Awards so special. Get in touch via our website www.mjauk.org if you'd like to join, or learn more about partnership opportunities. https://lnkd.in/eai8gVZd

I recently had an opportunity to speak to doctors at a leading corporate hospital on the importanace of reputation management and the role of the media in the same. With reputation playing a major part in the image that a hospital holds in the public eye, it has become critical for doctors working in these hospitals to be aware of the dos and don’ts when speaking to media. The workshop sensitized them on different aspects to be kept in mind when interacting with media and journalists. With an increasing erosion of trust in the medical profession among the general public, it is up to the doctors to take up the mantle and work to restore the trust factor in interpersonal relations between doctors and patients. Maintaining a relation of trust is a continuous process and requires constant efforts to keep optimal doctor-patient relationships. It is here that the media can play an important role in projecting the positive aspects of the medical profession to the general public. The session also touched on the changing media landscape and the increasing role of social media which comes with its own challenges. #reputationmanagement #mediatraining #medicalcommunications #hospitals

What steps do you take to uphold ethical standards when sharing medical information online? In the latest episode of Write Medicine, Julianna Merten, PharmD, BCPS, BCOP, and I discuss the ethical concerns surrounding short-form content on a public platform. While unregulated medical information is already on social media, we must strive for a higher standard. Julie advocates for embracing thoughtful best practices in line with CME guidelines. This includes fact-checking, obtaining image permissions, and providing references for content verification. Additionally, for nuanced or controversial topics, consider supplementing with video snippets or longer discussions to address complexities effectively.
