NEW POLICY: USAID has long supported initiatives that increase access to mental health services. The Agency now elevates this commitment with the launch of a Mental Health Position Paper, USAID’s first policy document related to the integration of mental health into our programs. The Position Paper signals our strong commitment to addressing mental health in development programming, recognizing the central role that mental health plays in advancing the Agency's mission regarding inclusive international development. Positive mental health allows people to more readily cope with stressors and adapt to change. At scale, mental adaptiveness translates into stronger, more resilient communities. In this way, elevating mental health throughout USAID is another way of putting into practice our Agency's mission of advancing a free, peaceful, and prosperous world. This pivotal moment aims to create a truly integrated support system. While we celebrate these advancements, it’s essential that more action is taken to address the underlying factors contributing to mental health challenges. We must work together to cultivate environments that encourage resilience, foster open communication, and strengthen connections. Mental health is the largest burden of disease globally. Health Systems Strengthening has not prioritized mental health, while the USA has used the Justice System and policing to victimize people with mental disorders. The USA credentialing (#apa #cacrep #counseling #therapy) for therapist is flawed and creates barriers for people of color, immigrants, people from low social background. If we as a nation or world is to prioritize mental health by making it accessible for all, there are many things that must change in order to create a diversified workforce that looks like the people. https://lnkd.in/d-W7MapP

This week the Mental Health Commissioner attended the 2024 Equally Well Forum in Melbourne. 🫶 The forum acknowledges the area of lived experience engagement in mental health. Lived experience experts led the conversation with clinicians, researchers, advocates, educators, service providers, policy makers and anyone keen to share strategies and case studies about: ⭐️ Positive actions taking place to improve physical health outcomes for people in the mental health system. ⭐️ Barriers and challenges that prevent advancement of physical health needs for people living with mental health challenges. ⭐️ Insights and opportunities to take the Equally Well movement forward in achieving its aim of closing the life expectancy gap for people living with mental illness. From preaching to the converted to driving real change, the Mental Health Commissioner spoke of an increased need for more integrated healthcare approaches to reduce diagnostic overshadowing practices in South Australia. A very important topic that needs to be discussed by government policy makers.
Many thanks to Khalid Mahmood MP for giving a passionate speech about the impact of #KidneyDisease on #MentalHealth in Parliament yesterday. Too many people with CKD can’t access the support they need and this needs to change. We're pleased to hear the Minister acknowledge the lack of clinical psychologists in renal units and commit to follow this up. We look forward to working with the government to ensure people with #KidneyDisease can access the care and support they need Last year we published a report with @CentreforMH calling for urgent action on kidney mental health services.
