The 36th meeting of the CAP-CSA welcomed more than 130 delegates from 25 countries and territories. All Members were provided with a comprehensive overview of UN Tourism’s work and achievements since the last meeting, with key priorities then presented for the years ahead. UN Tourism Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili said: “As our data shows, tourism’s recovery is close to complete here in #Asia and Pacific. We worked together to face the crisis head on. And now we must work together to focus on our priorities for the future. For this year, the #WTTC anticipates that #Travel & #Tourism will inject €223.1 billion into the economy, confirming its essential role as an economic driver, accounting for nearly 11% of the national #GDP. The sector is expected to support an additional 100,000 jobs, bringing the total to almost 3.1 million, achieving unprecedented employment levels. Tourism in South Africa - A Doorway To Cultural Heritage and Inclusivity 🇿🇦 September is Tourism Month in South Africa during which the country spotlights the importance of the sector’s contribution to the economy, and showcases the plethora of tourism offerings available to domestic and international visitors in all the nine provinces. The theme this year is “Tourism and Peace - 30 years of connecting people, places and culture”. It is an extension of the annual World Tourism Day on 27 September - a UN Tourism initiative that underscores the tourism sector’s pivotal role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The global theme of “Tourism and Peace” highlights how travel, cultural exchange and sustainable tourism practices can contribute to conflict resolution, reconciliation, and the promotion of peace worldwide. The UNDP has been working with the Government of #Seychelles 🇸🇨 and other stakeholders to support the resilience of the #tourism sector, which was particularly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Aiming to attract private capital to areas of high impact on sustainable development, the Seychelles SDG Investor Map launched in July 2023 identifies several Investment Opportunity Areas (IOAs) which target the tourism sector. Two IOAs have been identified by the #SeychellesInvestorMap for the tourism sector, namely in eco-tourism development and value chains, and in cultural and creative tourism development. Investments in these areas aim at lessening the industry-induced environmental burden on the planet, encouraging the participation of local communities in tourism value generation, and safeguarding national heritage. #internationaltourism is bouncing back stronger than ever According to the latest report of UN Tourism, 2023 saw a remarkable 88% recovery of pre-pandemic levels, with an estimated 1286 million international tourists worldwide, marking a 34% increase over 2022. The #middleast emerged as a leader in recovery, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 22%, while Europe, Africa, and the Americas also made significant strides, reaching 94%, 96%, and 90% respectively. Despite challenges, the outlook for 2024 is incredibly positive, with forecasts predicting a full recovery to pre-pandemic levels, supported by pent-up demand, increased air connectivity, and a stronger Asian market. To follow on from the UNDRR post I re-posed about tourism resilience related to climate change and natural disasters, this UNDP post provides a tools kit for Mauritius and Seychelles on how SDG's and be used in investment planning opportunities It a bit like the Social Return on Investment models being used in the UK during my time. Tools like this have been treated with some apathy by investors in the past, now however, we are seeing the impacts of climate on our Island and if we want to remain a world leading destination we really need to maximise our sustainability, not only to protects our tourist industry from sea level rise and beach degradation, but we should be seem as a world class example of solar power, energy independence and water security. We need to start however, with the easy wins and sort out the blight of litter and rubbish moving down our rivers into the ocean environment. People will not continue to spend thousands of dollars and suffer a 12 hour flight, unless we are on top of our game.
