Political party conferences help us to connect with policymakers and share best practices from the frontline. Following the recent Liberal Democrats, The Labour Party and The Conservative Party party political conferences Deven Ghelani wrote about why it's important for Policy in Practice to attend. 👉 Read here (and take a leaf through the selfies Deven took along the way) https://lnkd.in/eJ7xCgsH

At long last we have confirmation that the General Election will be on 4th July. The challenge for us now is to ensure that this is a General Election that addresses reform of social care and the way we look after the oldest and most vulnerable in our communities. They have been ignored, neglected and betrayed for more than 30 years and endless promises made and forgotten. This time has to be different. We have to hold the parties to account on what they will do to reform social care and give care to millions who can’t get it; give fair pay to a workforce that is short of 152,000 staff; end the closure of care providers and finally treat the oldest and most vulnerable section of our community with the respect it deserves. Big questions we need answers to before 4th July.
CARE of the country’s oldest and most vulnerable must be a top priority at the General Election on the 4th of July, ICG Chair Mike Padgham says. https://loom.ly/hLkbd2w

Shifting focus from French politics to the recent election results back home: 🇮🇪 🗳️ In summary: Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are poised to return as governing parties in the 34th Dáil, securing a combined total of 86 seats—just two shy of the 88-seat majority required. Fine Gael is expected to take on the role of junior coalition partner. To achieve a stable majority capable of weathering potential political challenges, it is likely that Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael will look to collaborate with either Labour, the Social Democrats, or possibly a few independents. 📅 This will likely be decided after Christmas. However, with the Green Party receiving just three percent of the vote—📉 down from seven percent in the 2020 election—and its leader, Roderic O'Gorman, as the only one of 12 Green representatives to retain a seat, narrowly averting the party’s total collapse after joining a coalition with Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael last time, it remains to be seen whether any minority parties will agree to collaborate with FF and FG, wary of exposing themselves to the same fate as the Greens ⚠️ and being scapegoated for potential government shortcomings. An interesting few weeks to come in Irish politics!!

A General Election is coming up (for the UK). The pre-election period will start on Saturday 25 May. Being a rule-abiding civil servant, there will be restrictions on what I can say, be involved in etc in relation to policy and any controversial/ sensitive issues. Planning for health is hardly controversial or sensitive, and policies around it are pretty clear(ish) but it is 2024. 6 weeks of relative external comms-related disengagement from me won't be noticed anyway. But I will keep a couple of my existing commitments with carefully managed presentations/ perspectives. Otherwise important work in the background continues. Our health and wellbeing can't be paused. We will still be interacting with the built and natural environment. We will have air to breathe. Food to eat. Activities to be undertaken. Places to go. People to see. Still lots of things to learn and read up on. Planning activities will continue or at least continue to be prepared in anticipation of post-4 July. I will be reading your posts, ideas, provocations etc with interest over the next weeks.

🌟 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀! In a hostel with 100 residents, the daily breakfast dilemma unfolds. 80% voice their dissatisfaction with upma, while the remaining 20% happily embrace it. A vote is proposed to resolve the deadlock, yet the majority's divided preferences lead to upma's continued reign. 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙇𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙤𝙣: In this microcosm lies a profound truth: when 80% of us prioritize personal desires over collective harmony, the minority's voice prevails. It's a powerful reminder to reflect on our choices, both in elections and in life. 🌐 𝙄𝙢𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙩 𝘽𝙚𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙠𝙛𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙏𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚: This allegory transcends breakfast preferences, offering a poignant commentary on the state of democracy. As we approach crucial election decisions, let's ponder: Are we advancing the common good, or yielding to divisive forces such as caste, regionalism, dynastic politics, or extreme nationalism? It's a crucial question as we navigate our collective path forward. Should our focus be on fostering unity, embracing diversity, promoting development, and embracing 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩? 𝙁𝙤𝙤𝙙 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙏𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩: 🤔 As we navigate the complexities of governance and society, may we remember the transformative power of unity over division. It's not just about breakfast—it's about shaping a better world together. What are your thoughts on this profound message? Share your reflections below! #Election2024 #ElectionInsights #UnityOverDivision #AbkiBar400Par #CollectiveHarmony #PowerOfChoice #VoteYourVoice #StrategicVoting #UpmaAnyone

📚 💡 Just read a thought-provoking article on Social Europe by Amandine Crespy and Bastian Kenn from the Institute for European Studies, ULB (IEE-ULB) about The EU’s People Skills Preparedness Agenda. The piece explores how shifting to a skills-based approach could affect social policy in the EU, and it raises some crucial points about what this means for inclusion and security in the workforce. As a PhD student researching social inclusion and job activation policies, I found this analysis resonates deeply with my own work on how EU frameworks impact local job markets. Highly recommend it to anyone interested in EU policy or social governance!🔗 Check it out here:
