Imagine this 👇 You're at the helm of a thriving nonprofit, dedicated to making a difference. But suddenly, you're facing a situation you hadn't anticipated. Despite your hard work and dedication, your efforts seem to go unnoticed. You realise that despite your role as a CEO or senior leader, there's a missing piece in the puzzle of achieving broader recognition and influence. The opportunities to share your vision on larger platforms, to be invited as a speaker at key events, and to have your expertise sought after seem just out of reach. This is a common scenario for many leaders in the third sector. Without a clear strategy for building and managing your reputation, even the most dedicated and effective leaders can find themselves struggling to make the impact they aspire to. It's not just about navigating crises; it's about understanding the power of a solid reputation foundation that opens doors, attracts opportunities, and amplifies the impact of your work. Really enjoyed teaching a risk, issues and crisis management course on Friday to an engaged, experienced group who asked oodles of good questions and talked through pertinent case studies. I always learn so much from these kinds of delegates. My takeaways from Friday included: 1. At the heart of so many public difficulties for organisations are governance and structural problems, that if unresolved will lead to repeated issues and potentially crisis. Thus strategic public relations leadership, as Anne Gregory and Paul Willis set out in their book of the same name, clearly has a constitutional role. 2. Sometimes an organisation's reputation is heavily influenced by factors beyond its immediate influence, such as the activities of competitors in the same 'category', or the behaviours of partners or members with whom it has a loose affiliation. In these cases some difficult choices might have to be made about focusing more effort on regulation of the category (i.e. policing partners) or on disaffiliation of some form. 3. The 'tipping point' between an issue and a crisis is often heavily influenced by the way an organisation responds to the issue. Amanda Coleman covers this really well in her new book 'Strategic Reputation Management'. Seeking to minimise an issue that matters to stakeholders or a general public, sharing inaccurate information on an issue, or seeking to pass on blame, are three ways that situations can be made worse.
