I talk to a lot of reps at different stages of their careers. And each person faces their own unique situation. But here are some common themes I notice. Associate Rep: Too busy learning to prioritize personal finances. Senior Sales Rep: Income is rising, but still working hard to maintain performance. Territory Manager: Increased responsibilities in career and personal lives, starting to think more about long-term goals. Vice President of Sales: Focused on the legacy they're leaving behind for both their company and their family.

Too aggressive. It’s what my reputation was coming into my first full time job. Blame the boss I had right out of college. “Eddie, when your brand owns 70% of the market, you should own 70% of the shelf space, if not more.” Made sense to me. So I came into the gig with swagger I hadn’t earned. And it bit me at first. But like any sales job, the foundation for success is trust. That trust led to the opportunity to take risks. To use creativity. This is one example of that. At the highest volume Home Depot in East Tennessee we built a display dedicated to solving lawn disease problems, complete with pictures of examples of various lawn ailments. That was around 15 years ago. But the lesson remains: opportunities come when trust is earned. Be someone others can trust. Who others can depend on. That’s how doors open. #sales #career #marketing
