I am off to business/conference work in Miami and Phoenix this week and noted this article in NYT. Thankfully British Columbia had it's come to [divinity] moment in the '80s with the leaky condo crisis. In the wake of many building envelope failures, Government and Industry moved to real third-party warranty programs, construction standards improvements, and requirements for Strata/Condo Corporations to study and fund replacement reserves. The stakes are higher for vertical multi-family buildings. https://lnkd.in/giaKySmF

Buildings in British Columbia are pretty advanced compared to most in North America. Waterproofing, construction right through wet season, seismic requirements, very rigorous climate and energy targets, and others. Of course this has led to increased construction costs too...

NIST saying it is about 2 years away from a preliminary report on the cause of the collapse of the towers is not helpful! Since periodic structural inspection requirements of existing buildings are infrequent, the buildings directly on the coast could be in terrible shape. It is fortunate that concrete and steel will show obvious signs of distress but waiting until some of the problems become obvious may be too late! 👎
