From the "When did George Clooney become a Neuropsychologist with a speciality in Gerontology?" Dept: A few points concerning Clooney's opinion piece: (1) Clooney starts out claiming that he is a Democrat, has always been one, has helped candidates get money, media attention, and so on and on. I am not a Democrat, I am a lifelong Independent but I know that we cannot have the Orange Messiah win the 2024 Presidential Election. If he wins, there will be chaos, abuse of governmental power, violence, and deaths as the Orange Messiah's tangerine force hunts down the enemies of OM. Seriously, OM may or may not be the antichrist but we will only know if he wins the presidency (i.e., yep, AC). (2) There is something fundamentally wrong with how Democrats are responding to Biden. They have had since 2016 to study and understand how the Marmalade Chosen One plays his game - he talks like he is on bad acid and no one cares. But why should his supporters care? He is the Chosen One and it doesn't matter if he takes an AK-47 and shoots up a school bus full of kids. Whatever he does is okay with his supporters and that's why he might win the presidential election -- his supporters believe that he has to win. Now compare this approach with what Clooney and other Democrats are saying about Biden. They want to dump Joe on a freezing mountain top and have him die when what they really should do is say "Okay, Joe F'ed Up his debate but it just doesn't matter. IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER!!! See: https://lnkd.in/ebNwcMJ4 C'mon folks, grow a pair and act like you really want Joe to win." (3) On a more serious note, has everyone forgotten that what people are responding to when they look at the debate or other instances when Biden has screwed up is just the PERFORMANCE and not his COMPETENCE. Remember old man Noam Chomsky's distinction between language performance -- where the use of language can be affected by a number of idiosyncratic factors (e.g., being tired, being on certain medications, overextending oneself etc.) -- and language competence -- the knowledge that one has about how to produce language (in Biden's case, his knowledge of political and administrative processes) which is not affected by transient factors. Now some democrats might say "Why doesn't Biden have a battery of neuropsychological tests (see: https://lnkd.in/ePFEmxBG) administered so we know what's going on?" To which I respond "You dumb bastard, if you really want Biden to win, you would use the Trump Technique -- IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT THE TESTS SHOW, WE ARE GOING TO VOTE FOR JOE!!!" Look, even if he does have some difficulties, Biden can still win the presidency. And after he is sworn into office he can decide how long he has to wait before he resigns from the position and puts Kamala Harris into the office with a fresh start. Articles such as these should include experts in gerontology and aging. Excellent points made.
Social Gerontologist; Public Speaker; Community Educator; Independent Writer and Editor; Author of "Aging Sideways: Changing Our Perspectives on Getting Older"
I'm a social gerontologist, and the both-sides-isms of The New Yorker piece are truly disturbing. The communication issues of Biden and Trump are incomparable. Trump is dealing with serious cognitive and personality issues. While Biden may be dealing with "tip of the tongue" challenges experienced by many of us as we age, most of the time he is actually mentally multitasking to keep his lifelong stutter under control. Here's how I explain his situation: If you were asked to multiply two 2-digit numbers in your head while carrying on a substantive conversation requiring analytical thinking as well as social interaction, could you do it? Try it. Katy Waldman, if you find this challenge difficult, even at your age, I would appreciate it if you would consider writing another piece that includes input from geriatricians, neurologists, and speech pathologists. https://archive.ph/phW4b https://lnkd.in/gvEHmXp5

In mid-October, I had the privilege of joining Dr. Robert J. Lifton, Dr. Thomas Singer and ten other psychoanalysts at the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco’s 7th Presidency Conference, where we explored how U.S. politics and the psyche shape one another. Our talks, covering topics from historical racial trauma to climate change; from LGBTQIA+ rights to the essential need for truth, are now published in an online volume: "Politics in a Traumatized World: Dystopia and the Creative Imagination." Edited by Dr. Singer with Shoshana Fershtman and Lynne Franco, the book is free to read here: http://bit.ly/4ix21jw. We offer it up with the hope that it sparks ongoing reflection and connection in these conflicted times. #psychology, #politics, #psychologyandpolitics, #trauma, #politicsandtruth, #psychoanalysis

With the 2024 election nearing, how can we combat misinformation when people believe falsehoods, even when faced with evidence of the contrary? Professor Steven Neurberg and Assistant Professor Michael Barlev investigate the reasons behind irrational beliefs and their interventions. Barlev explains, “It might be that many irrational beliefs are in fact, design features. It could be that many of these falsehoods serve strategic and social functions for people. They're there because they do something important for us.” Read more in this expert Q&A. https://lnkd.in/gyHMP4pd

"When it comes to lying in politics, Donald Trump is in a class of his own. According to the Washington Post, he made 30,573 false or misleading claims in his four years as president, increasing year-on-year from six per day in his first year to 39 per day in his fourth. Although other presidents have lied to the public, none have lied like this. Some of Trump’s lies are trivial, and many are self-aggrandising (“Nobody builds better walls than me”). Then there are his more egregious lies, like the one about the 2020 presidential election being “stolen” – demonstrably and dangerously contrary to the facts, with serious consequences for the nation and public trust. And these lies can cut through. Research by political scientists Kevin Arceneaux and Roy Truex found that this “big lie” about the stolen election was very “sticky”. Around 50% of Republican voters believed it, regardless of any emerging contrary evidence. The researchers also found that belief in this lie boosted Republican supporters’ self-esteem – as they weren’t “losers” after all. Politicians who lie can gain a strategic advantage. If you can successfully embellish the truth or construct a new reality, this often tends to be more interesting and engaging than the complicated truth. The truth may be a bit dull and uninspiring; the lie can be whatever you want it to be. You know what your audience wants to hear."

Reflections on Age and Time: Age, the passage of time, and what it takes with it. A few reflections on the matter: - One of the many things I love about the USA is how its culture respects and supports its elderly. It can certainly do more, but here, unlike in other places, many elderly people get to work for as long as they want or need to. In many ways, work allows them to feel engaged and contribute to society. - Although I have opinions about President Biden's current state, I never commented on the issue because I have not met him. Any clinician knows better than to make a decision based on a single point assessment. Elderly or not, we all fluctuate in our cognitive capabilities, so rushing to judgment is likely to err. I respect President Biden for taking his time to make decisions. He has earned respect through decades of service to this country. - Lost in the deluge of comments from all sides was the confusion about memory, eloquence, and judgment. Our brain works in cognitive domains, and apparent losses in one do not imply deficiencies in another. - Debates can be revealing. We should be careful not to descend into tribalism. It was hard to distinguish what happened at the debate from the scene in Black Panther where T'Challa battled Erik Killmonger for power, with the animated crowd cheering from the sidelines. - I have seen weak and strong, young and old, smart and less so falter when debating Mr. Trump. He is a fierce debater, and his style is hard to contend with because he is not bound by convention or logic. He has decades of experience managing the media, knows his followers well, and is always effectively controversial. - In the grand scheme of things, those who made age an issue now have some explaining to do, as the current landscape includes the oldest candidates. But again, I do not consider age a disqualifying characteristic.

one quick sentence about wisdom & aging in a recent WSJ piece, where I am trying to communicate my updated position (vs. claims from over a decade ago), as I firmly believe there is no conclusive evidence about aging and wisdom given all the confounds (incl. cross-temporal change/cohort effects and sampling) and mixed evidence across countries. Its more of a context issue. Its a thoughtful piece, on ageism, cognitive decline, and the broad sentiment of events from the last few weeks.

Especially read his last sentence.
Retired DC-based federal bureaucrat open to returning to government to help the implement the Trump agenda.
One short note before the wife and I continue our exploration of Pittsburgh. The wife mentioned yesterday that Alan Dershowitz officially changed his political registration from Democrat to I presume Independent. Desrshowitz had been complaining loudly on Fox News, where it seems is the only place he is welcome any more, about how Democrats have lost their way. Desrshowitz became a non-person in his liberal circle when he defended Trump in his impeachments. As is the habit of liberals, you either are entirely with them or you are against them. And showing any sympathy for Trump is enough to get the most loyal Democrat shunned. Of course, defending Trump in his impeachments was only the beginning of Dershowtiz's sins against liberalism. But, even being shunned, and later defamed for alleged sexual misconduct, which Dershowitz vehemently denied, he continued to call himself a Democrat. And indicated he voted for Biden and Harris in 2020. However, following the Hamas attacks of October 7th, and the leftist embrace of the Palestinian cause, Dershowitz wobbled and threatened that he might quit the party. Then came the anti-Israel and antisemitic incidents at some of our most prestigious colleges. Followed by Kamala Harris and others in the Democrat Party implying the Israel was blame worthy in the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and perhaps that was final straw. If a lifelong liberal and Democrat like Dershowitz can finally see the light that the Democrat Party has left him. I can only hope that this wakes up other Jewish intellectuals who are being forced to suppress their dismay at the direction of the Democrat Party to maintain their social position. As the Bible warns, it is not worth it to gain the whole world at the cost of your soul.

In-depth interview in the New York Times below with J.D. Vance, Republican Senator from Ohio, author, and former Silicon Valley venture capitalist, who has become a leading Trump supporter. Most Americans have come to believe that big government and big tech (especially when they collude against the public and work as allies) have monopolized power and thereby impoverished the country's neighborhoods and its industrial heartland regions such as Ohio and the rest of the Midwest. It's ironic that it's the Trump Republicans -- hitherto seen as the "party of the rich" and "party of white people" -- and not the Democrats (where is Vice President Kamala Harris on this issue?) who are voicing the most strident critiques of the status quo. A key grievance Vance taps into is that big entrenched institutions have sucked the "oxygen" out of America's public arena and aimed to impose a form of thought and speech control over educational, research and media institutions: the suffocating weight of self-censorship. One of the biggest threats to the efficacy of democracies (such as the U.S. and Canada) is the incapacity to discuss disagreements honestly and the inability to use deliberation and incentives to reach consensus. That's politics. Its lack is cultural and political paralysis: "sorry, you can't talk about that." Or, "sorry now is not the time to bring up these issues." If you can't talk about a problem honestly, how can you solve it? "Is there anything you’ve said that you regret, in the course of refusing to be policed?" "There are a ton of things I can point to where I can say, “I wish I struck this balance a little bit differently,” but I think that the real danger in American society is not unfiltering yourself, it’s filtering yourself."

Those supporting Democrats please pass this on to the Harris-Wakz Team: Dear Harris-Walz Team, Please review the following and take action: Every effort must be made to get Biden to let Harris take over as president. President Harris will create another titanic shift, and her popularity will rise sharply. Hot as president, she will get more votes, she will shine with more joy than ever. Her confidence will improve, and Trump will further lose his balance. Trump's biggest disqualification is his emotional health is a mess and Harris must do everything to get under Trump's skin to make him mad. When Trump is mad he exposes his disqualification even more. Facing Harris as president will cause Trump to explode. This explosion must be exploited by Harris. Furthermore the medical profession must take ads and porcelain Trump as unfit for the White House. After this ad Harris must say that in light of prominent doctors declaring Trump insane for the job to make matters clear they should both take a mutual sanity test. Trump will decline and Harris must take it and then declare that the choice is clear... I have an app on How to choose the best leader. Here are my related apps: https://lnkd.in/dcHCXAXP Please use my apps against Trump. Declare the White House an insanity free zone. Let Biden pass a law that every presidential candidate must undertake a sanity/leadership/qualification test.
