No VP wants to pay an email marketer $120k. So here's what happens. 👇 The VP hires someone early in their career (<3 years). High potential. Awesome people. But they have to learn the platform AND more about email. Not to mention a new business. Things are a little slow. They don't know what to look for, or what to avoid looking at. But they grow. They get better. And their roles expand outside of email... into operations, content, etc. Email gets a little ignored. They get promoted, grow outside their pay band, or move on... And you're back to hiring a high-potential candidate again. --- This approach is TOTALLY fine. But causes issues IF: 1. You can't justify a whole hire for email marketing. 2. You want to move fast. 3. You need an experienced eye to identify which email programs should be prioritized. This is why fractional email marketing is such a good fit. It's flexible (month to month), it taps into 10+ years of experience, there's little training, and you see impact quickly. From a hiring perspective, it's a low-risk, high-reward move IMO. If that sounds interesting, shoot me a DM. #emailmarketing
I’ve been working with Michael for 12 months and he transformed our email and lifecycle marketing. He is: -self-sufficient and resourceful: everyone in our company knows Michael, he has worked with engineers and marketers to get stuff done. -very knowledgeable, it’s great to have someone with so much experience, it saved us a lot of cycles. When we disagreed on a hypothesis and tested, Michael was right 90% of the time. -fast, he gets stuff out the door really quickly. -gets product data, this is one of the main things that I think lifecycle marketers can have a hard time with. Michael gets PLG products and all activation signals. If you don’t have confidence in your email and lifecycle marketing game, Michael will help you change that.
i've always wondered why VPs care, it's not like it's their money.
You just described exactly where I'm at in my career 😂 Was hired as an email marketing manager, but I quickly gained other responsibilities. Demand gen typically gets more love because results are quick. Lifecycle campaigns usually take time to show results and are therefore deprioritized. Well said dude. You sold me on you!
Too many people set email nurtures and sequences and forget about them unless there is a major problem.
Fascinating. I honestly have never heard of Fractional (niche department) like this — and you’re living it — love it 🤝
Loving the direction of fractional work, Michael Roberts. The scenario you outline seems very commonplace.
Makes a lot of sense!
Fractional Email Marketer is different than an email agency, or freelance email marketer in what way?

6moI have seen SO many agencies and marketing departments hire to fit a budget rather than hiring to fit a role. It is ALWAYS more expensive to hire a low-experience candidate for a high-skill role. Expensive in training costs. Expensive in damages from mistakes. Expensive in lost clients. Expensive in opportunity costs. PLEASE STOP hiring people who can't do the work yet just because they're a "good cultural fit" or "creative". You will get in returns what you pay for in skill and experience.
