=> How do you know if you're making progress? I spoke recently with a CEO who's doing a brilliant job surfing the difficult times her company's currently experiencing. One of her strategies is to set tangible daily and weekly goals ... "it's hard to have Quarterly targets when nothing's certain and everything's changing". Even in this time of disruption, find ways to see and celebrate progress. Teresa Amabile's book *The Progress Principle* says as much: taingible progress creates meaning. This video's a flashback to earlier this year when I first got to see a print copy of *The Advice Trap*, a very exciting milestone #theadvicetrap #thecoachinghabit #emotionalresilience #emotionalintelligence #coachingquestions #growthmindset #hrleaders #staycuriouslonger #curiosity Ainsley Shannon Jenna Mary
This is a really insightful question Michael, thanks for sharing. Oh, and many congratulations on getting your hands on your new book. I think as Coaches, your question is the one that we wrestle with all the time, how do we know when we are adding value. I can certainly think of numerous times when I've finished a coaching session and cannot honestly quantify or qualify my added value, but the Client has found it a great session, just because they had time to reflect on their business. In fact, this happened only yesterday! But there are more times (thank goodness!) when you see that 'lightbulb moment', when you see that your questions have unlocked a thought process. And I think at times we beat ourselves up over adding value. I reflect a lot about what you talk about in chapter 3 of The Coaching Habit, of thinking that one day we'll be found out because all we do is ask questions. But we can be guilty of underestimating the power of effective questions and the value they add, without being able to quantify it. Now, goals. Hmm, I'm not a fan personally, especially not SMART goals. In my opinion, goals and targets set people and businesses up for mediocrity or failure. But that's for another day maybe....
Love that book and that concept. I use it in my coaching practice regularly. Such an important idea to share with leaders. Gives them really focus for what matters and what moves the collective dial!
