One thing I haven’t done well (as principal) is influencing staff to focus on their individual impact. What I mean is - what effect size impact are they (teachers) having on their grades. How do we get staff to embrace this? What can I do to have staff excited about how much gain, their students are making? We’ve had a quantifiable measure since Hattie’s seminal work (2007) and a formula (an effect size) to measure this. What are the barriers to schools delivering on this? At yesterday’s Victorian Principal’s Conference, there was a lot of focus on what works (little has changed in what we have known for 20 years). I think the question should be - what are we doing to measure (and celebrate) what we already know works?

🌟 Exciting Milestone! 🌟 It is with deep appreciation and excitement for future possibilities that we announce the completion of a transformative learning partnership between Quotidian Strategies and the Black South West Network (BSWN), a leading Black-led, racial justice organisation in Bristol. Last year, we embarked on a collaborative journey to examine and document BSWN’s racial justice focused approach to community research, collaboration, influence and knowledge production. We developed three powerful outputs to underpin the development of a new theory of change, a strategic plan, a robust research approach, and an aligned evaluation framework: 📋The Learning Partnership Report – Contributions from BSWN’s team, trustees, and external stakeholders, alongside key methodological insights. 💡Learning Insights – A synthesis of contributions, integrating best practices and academic literature, with actionable insights for the future. 🧰The Toolkit – A set of resources designed as a theory for change to help BSWN change, laying the groundwork for future racial justice focused initiatives. BSWN Director, Sado Jirde said, “I see things I didn’t see before and I’m more sensitive to what we have and what we need. It’s been a powerful reflective journey. The process opened up a way of understanding our impact that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. We now have a deeper understanding of ourselves as an organisation, our relationship with our communities and wider stakeholders, and the insights and resources to help us move forward in our journey to a liberatory approach to our work. Overall the process was interrogative, challenging [at times] and creates new perspectives that shine a light on what we do." 🌱We look forward to seeing the ways Black South West Network deepens its impact. 🚀In the coming months, you can look forward to a series of learning insights and reflections from our partnership. Lol, I guess I've been a prolific poster today. I have a bit of a cold and am just laying back. Anyways, as I've continue to reflect and (agitate), I want to propose that a community organization be more concerned with the question, "how does an idea or proposal serve the community's needs" as the primary question, with the benefit to the organization being the secondary question. I feel like the ethics of a community organization would dictate that service to the community is the main concern. This is not a proposal that ignores the needs of the organization, but one that puts the community needs first, while paying attention to the important needs of the organization to continue delivering its services. In this respect community advisory boards that express the needs of the community to an organization become more important and develop more of a voice in shaping the work of the organization and the types of services it provides.
