A great read even for someone not directly in the health care industry. The challenges that they face are so hard to communicate fully to the rest of us. A couple of things struck me on fundraising, beyond people who work at foundations being asked for more innovation. The first is the laser focus on community and how you message. People are more apt to donate to immediate, care closer to home. This is increasingly the case the smaller a community is. But my take is that this can also be important for large urban areas where people still have ‘local’ hospitals where they tend to end up for emergency care as well as specialists for the most part. In our area I know that Michael Garron Hospital and Sunnybrook are working with community or looking to do so more. That said, I believe that smaller communities of course have a different focus. The second thing was the dilemma of hospital fundraising ‘draining’ the donor pool where there may not be enough people to give to other social needs. This is of course not good for the community in the end. And it’s not good for the hospital either because lack of social services such as sufficient mental health resources , end up bringing more people to the hospital. In the end, the North Star is community. And hospitals are indeed pillars of their communities and can be a central driver of support from the residents and businesses of the community, maybe not just to their own foundations but somehow helping awareness for related local social service providers . Anyway, kudos to our great hospitals and their foundations. The province depends on you and it is a lot of responsibility.
