October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the U.S., during which organizations and individuals bring attention to the epidemic of domestic violence. This year’s theme is Heal, Hold, & Center. Survivors with disabilities and Deaf survivors face physical, programmatic, communication, and attitudinal barriers. These barriers stand in the way of them getting support. For survivors with disabilities and Deaf survivors whose identities intersect with other marginalized groups, these barriers are even more extreme. It is critical that these voices are not just centered, but actively sought out by advocates. Activating Change has several resources for organizations that provide services to survivors with disabilities and Deaf survivors, as well as for organizations recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Today, on Human Rights Day, we highlight the ongoing violation of the rights of disabled people in Europe. Thousands remain institutionalized, living in segregated settings, deprived of liberty and the ability to choose their own lives. According to independent research, at least 1,4 million disabled people are still confined in institutions across Europe. Deinstitutionalization is not just a policy—it’s a human rights obligation. Together, let’s fight for a future where everyone can live with dignity, freedom, and choice in their community. #HumanRightsDay #DisabilityRights #Deinstitutionalization #IndependentLiving

We have joined forces with six other Youth Justice services, and the Police and Crime Commissioner for the West Midlands, to tackle racial disparity issues in the region. Collectively, we have received funding from the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales (YJB) to address racial disparities in the system, as part of a pathfinder project. The funding award follows independent reviews, such The Lammy Review (2017), which identified disproportionality in the youth justice system as its biggest concern. The review identified that Black, Asian and other ethnic minority groups are three times more likely to be in custody compared to white counterparts, and that Black children were seven times more likely to enter custody. In the West Midlands, 19% of children aged 10-17 are of Black or mixed heritage, yet 38% of Black or mixed heritage children of the same age are given a caution or sentence. More about the funding and the programme can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eSzf6tcN #youthjustice #yjs #yjb #westmidlands
