How do safety valves work? At their core, safety valves operate on a simple yet effective principle: pressure relief. When the pressure within a system exceeds a predetermined set point, the safety valve springs into action, swiftly opening to release excess pressure and prevent catastrophic failures. But how does this happen? Safety valves typically consist of a valve disc held in place by a spring mechanism. As pressure builds, it acts upon the valve mechanism, exerting force until the set pressure is reached. At this point, the valve opens, allowing the pressurised fluid or gas to escape, restoring equilibrium within the system. IN SERVICE PILOT VALVE (PORV)TESTING. If You Isolate the PORV (cutting off the service Pressure) Then test through the Field Test port on the Pilot. you have only Verified the set point of the Pilot itself. Verifying set point is very important however On a PORV that is only half of the test. To apply a T/O we must follow NB-23 PART 4, Section 3 Testing and OPERATIONAL Inspection of Pressure Relief Valves, is the Title of one section. Note the word "OPERATIONAL" We Must also Verify that the Piston in the Main Valve will Lift or OPERATE properly. The safest way is to Isolate the Valve and use the test Port underneath the main Valve, if available. Take the Time to Read the Testing section of the Maintenance Manual for the specific PORV you are testing. In the Past I have Found Many PORV's with the Main Piston Stuck. I remember one that I had to use a large meatal bar and a sledge hammer to remove the seized piston! The Main Piston does not become seized overnight. This is the Result of improper In-service testing.
