It seems a large part of the equation for the rapid growth of Anduril Industries, Shield AI, GM Defense and others has been reflecting back to the United States Department of Defense what it really wants to believe about itself. Earlier this week I was fortunate to attend the Association of the United States Army - AUSA Annual Meeting in DC and see firsthand the latest defense innovations and strategies. As a first-time Army SBIR awardee, AUSA was like cheat mode 🎮for customer discovery - I left with a much better appreciation for the future needs and requirements of the U.S. military. 🌟 Key Takeaways: ✅ Sheer Scale: AUSA made RE+ seem small! 🚨🚨Impact of the War in Ukraine: The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has fundamentally changed the defense landscape. Mobility is key, requiring greater electrification and new power and energy systems. ✈️🚀💻🚤 Multi-domain Operations: I’ve read about the Army’s Multi-Domain Operations strategy but AUSA made it come to life – with the integration of capabilities across air, land, sea, space, and cyber domains evident in many of the innovations on display. 🌍 World Reach:  – I enjoyed trying to decipher the Army uniforms of the various countries attending -  it was a reminder of the U.S. leadership in defense innovation. Microsoft has partnered with military tech firm Anduril to enhance the U.S. Army’s Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) by integrating Anduril’s Lattice platform. These smart combat goggles will provide soldiers with real-time data, 3D mapping, and threat detection capabilities, improving decision-making on the battlefield. The IVAS goggles will also feature low-light and thermal sensors, enhancing situational awareness and overall combat effectiveness. “The Defense Department is signaling its demand for a new era of innovation. There is a wealth of private-sector talent and capital eager to meet that demand. Both sides should seek opportunities to bridge the two — and foster the tech and talent that, as the Cold War showed, can defeat adversaries while also delivering enormous economic benefits to the American people.” Defense Innovation Board Chair Mike Bloomberg hit the nail on the head. A dual focus of Integrating new tech and attracting top talent to present the best solutions to national defense are the way forward. Many of my friends in Silicon Valley and in burgeoning maker spaces/hack-a-thons in universities across America recognize the opportunity that is present and through organizations like Shift and Reindustrialize are seeking to push the conversation forward. The intersection of our nations toughest technological questions and our brightest talent is a natural one - we just have to remove the roadblocks. Be The Solution.
