“Your first sales hire: Why industry knowledge might actually hold you back.” Here’s my take: Industry knowledge? Overrated. When hiring your first sales rep, don’t get caught up in finding someone who knows the industry inside and out. It might sound like a win, but it can be a hindrance. Here’s why: → Industry experience can create blind spots. They might think they know it all, which leads to assumptions and missed opportunities. → A fresh perspective is often more valuable. Someone starting from scratch will question everything— that’s where innovation happens. → If your first hire learns the industry from the ground up, they’ll be in the best position to teach others as your team grows. So, what should you prioritize? → A rep who’s curious, adaptable, and driven to learn. → Someone who’s not afraid to dive into the unknown and figure things out as they go. Takeaway: Avoid industry “experts” if you can. Hire someone hungry to learn, and you’ll build a stronger, more adaptable sales team in the long run. That’s the move

Hey everyone! Our team has been digging into data from hundreds of thousands of software sales job applicants to find common characteristics among the most successful software salespeople. We've noticed some common backgrounds among top performers, whether they’re at big publicly traded companies or smaller startups. One thing that might surprise you is that computer science majors aren't as prevalent as you might expect. Here are the top degrees that we found based on our observations: Communications - Graduates with a degree in communications often excel in software sales. Their ability to effectively convey ideas and engage with clients is a huge asset Economics - An economics degree can be very useful in understanding market dynamics and sales strategies, giving you a strong foundation for negotiating deals and analyzing trends Marketing - If you have a background in marketing, you’re likely well-equipped to handle the sales process, from understanding customer needs to crafting compelling pitches Political Science - This might seem unexpected, but political science grads often bring strong analytical and negotiation skills, which are great for sales roles Psychology - A psychology degree helps with understanding customer behavior and motivations, which can be a major advantage in tailoring your sales approach No Degree - Surprisingly, not having a degree doesn’t rule you out. Many successful salespeople come from diverse backgrounds and have built their careers through experience and skills rather than formal education If any of these degrees—or lack thereof—resonate with you and you’re interested in a career in software sales, feel free to reach out. Let’s connect and explore how you can leverage your background in this field! #SoftwareSales #CareerAdvice #TechJobs #SalesCareers #UniversityDegrees #JobSearch

We're hiring again to manage our growth (and not because we blew it last time). Beyond the "official" stuff in the posting, here's what we collectively value and are looking for: - No Ego: arrogance has no place here - Agility: you need to be able to think on your feet, and act quickly - Competence: numeracy, literacy, accuracy and a great personality - Efficiency: If you detest time sheets, you'll fit in. We value productivity over bureaucracy - Excitement: you want to work on the most interesting challenges in the market research business, and with the absolute best clients. https://lnkd.in/gyeefVa3

Why Sales is My Engineering Escape! Ever get that surprised look when you tell people you're an engineer... in sales? Yeah, I hear it all the time. But the truth is, while coding can be a superpower, it wasn't mine. Don't get me wrong, I respect the heck out of those who can troubleshoot systems and build intricate programs. But for me, the thrill lies in human connection. Here's why I love it: The Human Zoo : Every interaction is like entering a new exhibit. You meet all sorts of characters – the friendly "Yes please!", the politely direct "No thanks", the mysterious "Call me later", and even the occasional grumpy gatekeeper. It's a fascinating jungle out there! The Art of Conversation : I'm not talking small talk. Sales is about understanding needs, building rapport, and crafting a solution that resonates. It's a constant puzzle, and when you find the perfect fit – that "aha!" moment – there's a satisfaction that code just can't replicate. The Pressure Cooker : Sure, sales can get intense. Targets loom deadlines approach, and rejections sting. But guess what? A good organization with a positive culture can turn that pressure into fuel. With the right support system, you learn to bounce back stronger and celebrate every win, big or small. My Scarred but Empowered Journey : Let's be honest, I've had my share of bad experiences too. Last year, I was in a company with a toxic environment – it felt like coding in a server meltdown! But that experience taught me the importance of finding the right fit. So, the next time you meet an engineer in sales, don't be surprised! Maybe, like me, we discovered a passion for human connection, a love for the conversational puzzle, and the thrill of building something meaningful – not with code, but with relationships. What about you? Are you in the right professional jungle? Share your experiences in the comments! #saleslife #engineeringsales #humanconnection
