🔑 Unlocking the secret to success as a young research scholar... Did that catch your attention? Hopefully yes, I am trying really hard to write a LinkedIn-style post. Months ago, I was named one of twenty-five Laidlaw Foundation Scholars at The University of Hong Kong. As part of this prestigious program, each scholar embarks on a 6-week research project in their first summer, followed by a Leadership in Action (LiA) experience in their second. This summer, I delved into the world of research at the University of Leeds. Leading the project "Reading Through Gaming in Primary School," we aimed to identify boardgame features that could predict its reading difficulty. Over the course of 6 weeks, I learned to play numerous board games, visited a local primary school in the UK to teach the students how to play, recorded their reading performances, and meticulously analyzed the data. By summer's end, our findings revealed a strong positive correlation between participants' reading levels and their reading accuracy during gameplay in 4 out of 7 games. These promising results pave the way for further exploration. We hope to continue our work by i) collecting more data from a larger population and ii) running a regression model to establish a scale when the sample size is sufficient. A heartfelt thank you to our dedicated supervisors, Peter Hart, Ph.D. and Paula Clarke, as well as my exceptional teammates, Helen Henwood and Fatima Malik. I am proud to say that I have become a better version of myself. Perhaps not smarter, but more resilient, open-minded and independent. And of course, more experienced in stair-climbing (our office was situated at the top level of the building and the stairs were terrible to climb). 🌟 #laidlawscholar #researchfindings #boardgames #readinglevel
