Expert Christina Boesenberg from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) explains that 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐞 and solid 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 is merely a prerequisite for professional success but not a sufficient criterion (article 👇). I have experienced it myself, the right 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐞 plays a big role. Appearance, positive attitude, clear and unambiguous language, and a strong presence are all critical ingredients. But none of this matters, if no one knows! The key to unlock that door is 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 – to the right people, in the right way, at the right time. Though, visibility is vulnerability. Standing in the light casts a shadow, and there will be people with different opinions. Many 𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐡𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐞 to put themselves in the spotlight. Especially women struggle with marketing their achievements. Possible reasons? Self-doubt, fear of negative feedback and conflict. Result? Low representation of women in leadership positions. Personally, I know the sense of doubt and hesitation all too well. Yet, I made the conscious decision to step into the LinkedIn spotlight to boost my visibility factor. Why? 💄🩴✨ Behind the Brands: Insights from Women Leaders at NARS & Birkenstock NARS on my face, Birkenstocks on my feet—it’s my go-to look! And today (October 23rd), I was lucky enough to attend an insightful panel session featuring two amazing leaders from these iconic brands. Angela Simpson (Senior Vice President of Marketing at NARS Cosmetics) and Kia Holifield Wimmer (Vice President, Intellectual Property Counsel at BIRKENSTOCK) shared powerful insights on women in leadership and how to build a brand in today’s rapidly changing consumer landscape. Corporate structures today are often dominated by uniformity, with a noticeable lack of diversity, especially in leadership positions. Many brands struggle to build genuine connections with their audiences because they don’t reflect the diversity of the customers they serve. Angela, however, stands out in her approach at NARS. She emphasized that transparency and authenticity are crucial in today’s market, and this drives her team’s strong commitment to diversity. With 30+ marketers from different races and genders contributing to key decisions, her team ensures that a wide range of voices is heard. This balanced perspective allows NARS to resonate deeply with diverse audiences. Angela’s leadership left a lasting impression on me: No matter who you are as a customer, there is someone on her team at NARS who understands and represents you. In many corporate environments, leadership often lacks the human element, focusing more on results than on people. However, Kia stands apart with her leadership philosophy, emphasizing two key aspects: 1️⃣ Emotional intelligence—the importance of understanding and managing emotions, not just in oneself but also in others. Kia stressed the need to care for employees from a human standpoint, being truly aware of their emotions and well-being. 2️⃣ Authenticity—the importance of being true to yourself, knowing what you want to do, and ensuring that your skills align with the job requirements. When you think of female leadership, who comes to mind? Perhaps Michelle Obama or Beyoncé. But throughout our careers, many of us notice the lack of nearby role models who not only inspire behaviors but also help us see what we can truly achieve. With this in mind, I took advantage of the Executive MBA environment at IESE Business School to create a discussion group with female executives. The idea? To foster genuine connections and build a safe space to exchange experiences and insights. Last week, we held a very special gathering, made possible with the support of Alice, who co-led this initiative with me. Daniela Gontijo, Country General Manager Latam at Louis Vuitton, welcomed us to the beautiful store managed by Ana Carolina, where we engaged in a deep exchange of experiences and challenges - paired with Moët champagne 🥂 Being surrounded by more than 30 women who have come so far is both inspiring and transformative. The leadership power tool every female executive needs... "I'm in a rut, a lot of my peers seem to have surpassed me." Recently, I spoke with a brilliant female executive—we'll call her Tayo. Tayo is exceptional at her job, consistently delivering results that outpaced her peers. Yet, despite her accomplishments, she wasnt reaping the rewards many of her peers seemed to be.
