👏 Congratulations to Shannon Bergt, [MERC] Military Energy Resilience Catalyst Program Alumni and U.S Army Garrison Detroit Arsenal (DTA) Power of Partnerships. This U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) collaboration provides technical assistance for geothermal energy deployment at federal sites. Fort Bliss in Texas is one of the largest U.S. military bases, covering about 1,700 square miles. Home to the U.S. Army’s 1st Armored Division, it is also a site for the Pentagon’s efforts to develop clean energy generation and microgrids for delivering electricity at its installations. Sage Geosystems Inc., a Houston-based developer of geothermal energy and storage technologies, has a Department of Defense contract to examine the feasibility of installing a geothermal power system for Ft. Bliss. The U.S. Army Climate Strategy has a target of reducing greenhouse gasses from its facilities by 50% by 2030 (with a net-zero goal by 2050) and installing a microgrid on every base by 2035 in order to enhance energy security. According to a recent article by the Society of American Military Engineers, the U.S. Army Space & Missile Defense Command, Republic of the Marshall Islands, has been studying ways to achieve 100 percent carbon-pollution-free electricity by 2030. Their findings revealed that Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) could be the solution to reduce long-term energy costs and provide clean freshwater to meet the needs of Kwajalein and neighboring Ebeye. OTEC technology offers a 100 percent carbon-free electricity solution.
