I couldn't agree more, Dr. Akbulut.   While putting in place production and distribution infrastructures to feed DRI plants with hydrogen will take years, modifying blast furnaces can help reduce carbon emissions today!   The number of blast furnaces operating worldwide makes it hard to replace them all by direct reduction modules in time to meet CO2 targets. In 2023, the US's Global Energy Monitor tracked over 1,400 blast furnaces in 55 countries with a total capacity of 2 billion mt. In 2022, the world's blast furnace production approached 1.3 billion mt of pig iron, according to worldsteel. If you take India as an example, the expected growth in steel production there is almost exclusively planned with new blast furnaces.   With blast furnaces not set to be abandoned on a global scale anytime soon, attention will turn to how they could be modified to make less carbon-intensive steel.   SMS group EASyMelt for example is a resource-flexible and cost-efficient breakthrough technology to reduce coke feed in the blast furnace by up to 60%-70% with emissions to fall similarly. This will represent a significant milestone for the decarbonization of existing blast furnace plants worldwide.   Find out why the EASyMelt is not simply an alternative to DRI, but the future of conventional ironmaking.
