Just finished the course “Introduction to Songwriting” by Cliff Goldmacher!  I have been a big fan of music ever since I was in middle school. Beginning with singing at church, to picking up a phone to download Pandora and Spotify to listen to some tunes, to picking up a guitar and play a few chords and learning how to make music on GarageBand, this course has helped embark on a journey of songwriting. I hope my creativity will inspire many people who want to become singers, artists and songwriters in the music industry!  #songwriting

A common issue I see with many of our clients at Hart & Songs is whether they’re correctly collecting their mechanical royalties or if songs are missing from their catalog. One tool I love is The Mechanical Licensing Collective’s Public Search database, which I use to cross-reference my clients' catalogs—even when they’re signed with a publisher or publishing administrator. It’s crucial to regularly verify registrations because I often find gaps where something fell through and recent songs aren’t being collected. I’m a Nashville-based songwriter and producer who’s written with some of the biggest names in sync. But it wasn't always like that because I wasn’t always this confident in my songwriting process. In fact it was difficult for me to finish songs. So how did I break free from the endless voice memos and finish songs?  These three things were the biggest game-changers: 1️⃣ Narrow down your ideas If you don’t - You’ll be overwhelmed with hundreds of half-finished ideas, none of which lead anywhere. Take 1 song idea from your voice memo, and commit to it for a session. Put aside all other ideas temporarily and focus on completing just one. 2️⃣ Structure your song before you play If you don’t, you’ll spend hours recording aimless riffs that don’t come together. Instead, plan the basic structure—verse, chorus, bridge—before you start playing. Write out a quick song map on paper or in your notes app to guide your session. 3️⃣ Record with intention, not perfection If you don't, you’ll spend endless hours trying to edit every note and not actually get anything done. When students learn how to build scales, they get to understand the “why” behind the notes rather than just memorising them like a list. It’s like learning the recipe for a cake instead of just memorising how it tastes. When they understand how a scale is put together, like knowing that a major scale is made up of specific steps between notes, they can create any scale, starting from any note. This way, they can apply their knowledge in more situations, like writing their own songs or playing along with different music. It also makes the scales easier to remember because they know how they work, not just the notes themselves. This approach helps them become more confident and creative musicians. Songwriting starts from here. Music is all there.

Studies show that 25% of listeners skip to the next track within the first 5 seconds—meaning the opening line is your best (and possibly only) chance to grab their attention. I’ve analyzed over 1,000 song openings and have identified 9 distinct categories that successful first lines tend to fall into. I watch a lot of people on LinkedIn discussing #sync and general placement of music within TV, film, advertising and corporate video. Some give very helpful free advice whilst many others charge for a service to help people looking to get into sync placements as songwriter and composers. It seems that many people believe sync to be "an easy way in" to making money from your music, whereas it is in fact, extremely competitive and somewhat flooded with music both good and bad. The best advice I would give any composer/songwriter entering that marketplace, is to first perfect your songwriting techniques so that you have GREAT songs that take you to the next level, rather than just attempting to rush a song together for an advertised placement opportunity. Study videos on YouTube by people like Guy Michelmore (orchestration techniques), listen to tracks by the great composers John Williams and Hans Zimmer and understand what sets these people so far ahead of the field. These people actually make a living from their music for very good reasons. Never stop learning, always try to be the best you can be.
