Remember your first job interview?
For a teenager getting into the workplace it is pretty scarey stuff. My own experience this weekend with my 16 year old daughter trying to get a part time job was quite an eye opener 😳
Managers (in hospitality) she spoke to asked whether she had any experience? Not sure what answer they were expecting….
Young Enterprise UK do such a fantastic job supporting young people develop confidence moving from school into the workplace 🙌 They work with over 40,000 volunteers and by 2023 will have given opportunity to over 1million young people through the great work they do.
An employability session run by the brilliant Ellie Denno last week helped over 70 Year 10 students think about all the transferable skills they have for their first jobs.
Students with such talent, struggling to see it in themselves. We must help them whenever we can as parents, teachers, volunteers and future employers. Give them confidence 💪🏻
….going back to my own experience this weekend…to those employers out there taking on young people, maybe ask what skills and hobbies they have rather than ask about their experience…you may get a better answer…..🧐

What would I do if I was an aspiring apprentice today?
Today's apprenticeship market has changed since I first started mine.
However, hindsight is a wonderful thing 🙃 where I can now identify where I went wrong - alongside what I have learnt in the industry so far, here are my 3 tips for aspiring apprentices. 📈
1. Research - understand what skills/traits are required from the role you want.
- use this to fill in skill gaps may have, and use the traits as a way to map out your future growth.
2. Ask for help - reach out to industry professionals, recruiters, and early careers advisors! Ask them for tips regarding interviews and CV writing.
- these people know what's required, and they can help steer you in the right direction and a friend on the inside is always a bonus. 😏
3. Network, network, network - try to get to know as many people in the industry as possible, they can either be current graduates, apprentices, or even professionals.
- start posting on your LinkedIn about your current learning and skills.

The Placement Cell must own its responsibility to empower students, going beyond mere facilitation to proactively drive their preparedness:
A. Decoding Job Descriptions: By dissecting roles, Placement Cells help students understand the nuanced expectations of employers, enabling strategic preparation.
B. Employer Insights: Offering research on company cultures, leadership styles, and growth opportunities helps students make informed decisions.
C. Facilitating Internships and Projects: Strong partnerships with industry players ensure students gain hands-on experience that enhances employability.
D. Building Alumni Bridges: Placement Cells must engage alumni as mentors, leveraging their success to inspire and guide students.
E. Proactive Skill Building: Placement Cell MUST organise mock interviews, resume-building workshops, and aptitude tests regularly and often make it events or competitions. These initiatives not only boost confidence but also align students with the demands of top recruiters.
Ownership is the key to their role! When Placement Cells take responsibility, they become the driving force behind student success.
