𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐌𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐦𝐚 𝐚𝐥-𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐟 As part of Basma al-Sharif’s solo exhibition 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘦 at de Appel, the artist will be sharing research from her new work 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘭𝘦 through a symposium and workshop that critically examines the ways in which Western cultural hegemony fails to see immigrants as integral to their populations, by exploring one of the most vulnerable spaces: the kindergarten, as a space of potential reform. The workshop will take place on Saturday 29 June between 11am and 3pm. Through readings, personal testimonies, and group discussion, the workshop is aimed at defining the imperceptible loss associated with displacement and immigration. Drawing from al-Sharif's research 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘪𝘳𝘤𝘭𝘦, the artist will share material on separation anxiety, the concept of transculturation, and integration. Traces tells this previously untold history through the prism of arts, culture and creativity. Identity politics, a concept based on the interests and perspectives of social groups, has become a dominant force in modern socio-political landscapes. This concept has profound implications for cultural events and festivals, which often serve as public expressions of collective identity. From an economic standpoint, cultural events and festivals attract tourism, create jobs, and stimulate local businesses. However, the rise of identity politics alters these dynamics, leading to economic disparities. Psychologically, identity politics affect the cohesion of social groups, with festivals that emphasize a particular identity enhancing group solidarity but also leading to social fragmentation. Balancing inclusivity and cultural specificity is a delicate task that requires careful consideration of psychological principles. From a security perspective, identity politics influences the safety and security measures at cultural events, with events that highlight contentious issues becoming targets for protests and violence. Security professionals emphasize the importance of risk assessment and crowd management in such scenarios. Culturally, identity politics may enrich festivals by introducing diverse perspectives and practices, but it can also lead to cultural appropriation or the commercialisation of cultural elements. The challenge lies in honouring cultural traditions while avoiding their exploitation for commercial gain. In Australia, the Darwin Festival, Alice Springs Beanie Festival, Notting Hill Carnival, and Carnival of Cultures demonstrate similar dynamics.
