#Ukrainian postal history is a vital part of Ukrainian heritage. I spent part of today adding Ukrainian postal museums to the Postcrossing listings of postal and communications museums. Have you heard of Postcrossing? Postcrossing is a global initiative that connects postcard enthusiasts, fostering cultural exchange through the simple act of sending and receiving postcards. It celebrates the art of postcards while sharing #Ukraine’s rich postal heritage with the world. Postcrossing is also attracting a newer, younger and more diverse community to #philately--the study of postage stamps and postal history. Incorporating Postcrossing into discussions of Ukrainian postal history highlights how everyday communication helps preserve and promote Ukrainian national heritage. It broadens global understanding and solidifies Ukraine’s place within the world, making history accessible through every postcard sent. In the context of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War and political challenges, emphasizing the role of Ukrainian museums underscores the resilience of Ukrainian culture. It shows that, despite adversity, Ukraine continues to celebrate and preserve its history, using museums as a means of resistance and affirmation of its national identity. By drawing attention to Ukrainian museums, we acknowledge their vital role in safeguarding the nation's cultural legacy and promoting it on a global scale. #філателія #музеєзнавство #українознавства cc: Ukrposhta Igor Smelyansky p.s. here is an article I did for the American Philatelic Society about The Ukrainian Museum's philatelic collection: https://lnkd.in/eyqBmhJw

Just published in the September special issue of Communist and Post-Communist Studies on memory and the violent past in Russia: The Cossacks of Southern Russia in 21st-Century Memory Politics by Alexey Miller and Alexander Kamentsev https://lnkd.in/gPUQcY4p Free to access for one week! Abstract: In modern Russia, the memory of the Cossacks is perpetuated in monuments and museum exhibitions; their culture and history are described in school textbooks, including specialized ones; some regions open special Cossack classes; and hundreds of social media groups discuss the history of the Cossacks. Central and regional authorities as well as Cossack organizations, both official and unofficial, take an active part in the politics of remembering the Cossacks. However, there are practically no specialized studies exploring memory politics regarding the Cossacks. Nevertheless, this topic deserves attention and careful analysis not only because a variety of intensive processes are taking place in this area, but also because this case has a number of specific features and allows one to take a fresh look at some dichotomies widely used in memory studies such as victim and heroic narratives, official and unofficial memory, and local and national memory politics.

"Deportation in East Central Europe in the 20th Century: Snapshots of Invisible Incarceration" is the 13th volume in the Book Series South-East European History, edited by Mihai Dragnea and published by Peter Lang on behalf of the Balkan History Association (BHA). The volume presents a wide-ranging survey of forced deportations by totalitarian regimes in Eastern Europe throughout the 20th century. The chapters focus on deportation policies and practices among regimes in Romania, Ukraine, Albania, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Greece, and the former U.S.S.R, collectively highlighting the long-term effects of these policies and their significance to contemporary societies in Eastern Europe. Deportation was a pervasive phenomenon, with socio-economic, demographic, and political implications that have structurally affected the shape and composition of contemporary European societies. Whether considering political repression, ideological clashes, social upheavals, territorial claims, ethnic cleansing, or conflicts within and between societies, deportation was a destabilizing factor across all aspects of twentieth-century East European history. The result of a project initiated by the Association, it will be a crucial resource for researchers, educators and policy makers. https://lnkd.in/dHAFGJEf
