Time and time again it’s been proven that giving center stage to #cultural heritage, thereby dignifying people, their language, their environments, their realities and knowledge, are the most valuable peace building, peacekeeping and conflict curbing tool there is. 🌍Across the globe in the various contexts I have worked I have seen first hand that while conflict is often spurred on by lack of access to basic services, compounded by factors such as climate change, or neighboring wars, exacerbated by complex or extreme socio political economic dynamics, constrained financial environments, not to mention disinformation - the truth is that at the heart of all of this is the human. The one who wants to be heard, seen, listened to and is likely part of the solution. Our humanity. Yet - while this is a recognised fact amongst many field experts in peace and security - the strategic importance of cultural heritage still struggles to make into global discourse and global practices - and would need to both properly embedded and funded both into conflict prevention and conflict mitigation. 🔹Today more than ever we need to go back to the basics of how we rebuild trust at all levels - trust in the information that should be generated to save lives and yet has lost credibility, trust in sources of that information, trust in what we hear and see - and this will only get worse as #AI generated #disinformation gains even more traction - and above all trust in each other. 🔸#Community building through local #dialogue, a renewed sense of pride in local heritage and cultures, a sense of identity and belonging can go a long way in these complex times we are living. 🗯️Time to go back to the roots of what makes us thinking intelligent beings capable of incredible wonders and yet capable of atrocities when that sense of identity and dignity is lost. I was thrilled to read this latest article by the brilliant career peacekeeping expert Paulin Regnard - who spent his life across the world successfully leading local and regional efforts in community and institution building. Peace building is a daily effort - a daily challenge - and yet opportunities to adapt our efforts are boundless if we educate our selves daily. The loss of these treasures doesn’t just affect history books; it impacts people’s identity, pride, and connection to their past. 👉 Cultural heritage belongs to everyone. It tells the story of who we are, where we come from, and the values that shape our communities. But when cultural property is taken unlawfully, we risk losing pieces of our shared history. 🤝 We applaud the organizations working to protect our heritage, from museums and heritage institutions to law enforcement and international agencies.
