In Iran it has connotations of sickness, but also wisdom. Yellow symbolizes many things and has different meanings in different cultures. We would like to see your interpretation of this color. PAY IT FORWARD- We will be donating 10% of all entry fees from this show to Soles4Souls. Since photography’s invention, black life has been presented as fraught, short, agonizingly filled with violence, and indifferent to intervention: living death—mortevivum—in a series of still frames that refuse a complex humanity. In Mortevivum, Kimberly Juanita Brown shows us how the visual logic of documentary photography and the cultural legacy of empire have come together to produce the understanding that blackness and suffering—and death—are inextricable. As groundskeeper in the military fortress Furggels, Switzerland, we deploy nothing less than the integrality of janitorial cash flows to the buildup of KMR's collection. Thanks to our debt free balance sheet we were able to recently complete our first 7-year contractual agreement with an important artist estate, free from structural liabilities. Everything we do is structured as options, so as to pay full and fair value for best in class artworks with traceable origins. We are in the business of managing artist estates for the benefit of posterity. In the cases where there are no artist descendants and no clearly defined estate, we reconstitute the estate through our market participation. In most cases we make the market for the artists we are interested in and most often are the highest bidders in what appears most often a completely destroyed market characterized by decade long art market neglect. Our business model places great emphasis on art content syndication and commercialization. This way we don't need to rip off our long term valued stakeholders, namely the members of an artist estate and long term collectors of works of art we value. They are actually our friends and not competitors. This is not like the Pokémon game where you have to catch them all. You don't. We are thrilled when others are just as excited about works of art as we are and show it by outbidding us at auction.

Just got the disappointing news that my application for an outdoor art show was rejected. In that application, I included a kefiyyeh-inspired landscape painting (pictured below). Is the artworld also falling prey to global silencing around Gaza? I think it is. Ours is the Age of Doxxing. What the doxxers don't realize is that the resolved always find ways to re-route their dreams. Within that alchemy, more complex, imaginative truths emerge. For Alam and his team, the cancellation signals that voices from the Global South – the majority world, as Alam puts it – are not truly welcome beyond the region despite the lip service paid to “diversity”. These repressions are in lockstep with a wider crackdown on expression. In the UK, Bristol’s Arnolfini Gallery has dropped Palestinian events for fear they contradict state guidance that culture venues must remain apolitical or risk funding cuts. Given the political kernel of so much contemporary culture, this demand is absurd but it is indicative of Britain’s intolerant Tory administration. In truth, Arnolfini has held many political events so why do the Palestinian ones provoke censorship? The situation is becoming Orwellian in its mechanisms of exclusion, erasure and silence. Even Jewish artists, such as Candice Breitz, are now being ostracised for their Palestinian sympathies. The horror in Gaza is ripping faultlines through the art sector. The failure of major institutions to condemn Israel’s war crimes in Gaza as they condemned Putin’s invasion of Ukraine has triggered outrage, protests and sit-ins. Those who disagree say that Hamas’s massacre makes such comparisons shaky. Even as I condemn October 7, I don’t believe Palestinian people should pay for Hitler’s crimes. Art stakes itself on empathy: between artist and subject; art and viewer. It also wagers on mystery: that which bewilders us, makes us hesitate. Sometimes it makes us angry. Sometimes it redeems us. Sometimes it does both. It’s somewhere to backtrack, rethink then recomplicate. The lady who compared the Jews to Nazis had, as a young woman, hidden a Jew in her attic during the war at enormous personal risk. Humanity is as multi-faceted as a diamond. Art is a place where its strangeness can shine. The cancellations damage the freedom and creativity they claim to protect. As James Baldwin put it: “Life is more important than art. That’s why art is so important.” If dialogue across difference is shut down in the house of culture, what hope remains elsewhere?""

Come to the Elaine Fleck Gallery to see SANDRA MANZI'S "HISTORY NOW" in person. The initial inspiration for my paintings comes from my own photos of observations of everyday urban life. From these observations I start a process of layering and superimposing different time periods - looking for small similarities and differences which speak of larger questions. I like to create stories by taking characters from my own photos and from art history, blending and rearranging them to suit the narrative. Layering different scenes, similar to the way a film editor uses a technique called the cross dissolve, creates a visually complex painting which opens the narrative up to many interpretations. I utilize this technique in my paintings in order to generate ideas about the human condition, and to stir our subconscious.  I reference the different genres from the canon of art history - combining images from art history with scenes of daily life as I experience it in the present. As an art history buff, I learned many things by seeing the parallel between art with culture and human nature. Through a blend of different periods and styles, I wish to get the viewer to reflect on the present in relation to our past. This series started as I was asking myself the questions of how do I make work that has value in this time in our lives right now, what is the work that I can make that has some meaning and can make some contribution to the very long conversation of art history as it relates to the human experience? My intention is to make us think about how people and our day to day lives may be similar or different from the way it was many years ago, and how artists have chosen to depict these events through the centuries. I'm also interested in how technology has mediated these experiences. If it is different, in what way? If it is the same, how and why might it be similar? I like to think that time has changed many things, but our emotions and what it means to be human has not changed. I capitalize on the intersection between traditional subjects such as portraiture, florals, and other genre's within the canon of art history, with the more mundane and non traditional imagery from our daily lives. Hints of certain art historical periods and movements such as 17th century Baroque art, Impressionism, and Surrealism get blended with digital applications to create a natural continuum of these movements that are constantly shifting as our realities change with technology.
