Your biggest competitor in an RFP is hardly ever the other vendors competing. It's the incumbent. Instead of getting happy ears when they reel off all the things they hate about their current vendor, ask these... ❓Have you made the decision you’re 100% moving or are you just seeing if there’s anything better out there? ❓Have you discussed your issues with your CSM? What have they done about it? ❓When’s your renewal date and have you given notice? ❓What happens if they tell you they can solve all these challenges and offer a very competitive renewal proposal? ❓I'm guessing you're gonna have a battle with your CFO if they offer a cheap renewal to keep your business... ❓Transitioning takes a lot of time, effort and money - surely its easier just to stay put? (shoutout to George Donovan for this one!) ❓Who in the business is gonna be upset if you tell them you’re making the move? Why?

Hear it from a vendor, shedding light on why this happens and what you might be overlooking: 1. Selective Pursuit: Vendors are strategic about which RFPs they chase. They evaluate opportunities carefully before investing their time and resources. 2. Perception Matters: How vendors perceive your company and the RFP process can greatly influence their decision to respond. 3. I agree that focusing solely on the lowest initial price within RFPs undermines the goal of building resilient supply chains. Overemphasis on short-term cost savings can lead to capacity shortages and service disruptions when the market inevitably shifts. Perhaps we should explore a more holistic approach to RFPs, where factors like carrier reliability, network flexibility, and long-term value creation are weighted alongside price. Implementing solely RFP led to alot of carriers going OOB and brokers too due to depending on those low cost carriers who aren't well complianced leading to massive claims with high frequency. And many other reasons. But who cares at the end.
Shippers – you have made RFPs for new vendors entering your network, nearly impossible to win. Very tough to win in an RFP when you have the following circumstances: - Over 20 participants - No opportunity for 1 on 1 call w/ shipper to discuss RFP intention, goals, etc. - No granular detail on facility profiles or warehousing operations. - One Round, no feedback RFP’s used to be about getting to know a shipper’s network well-enough that you could then rate it at a sustainable price throughout the period of the bid. Nowadays it seems like the winning strategy is -- quote at today’s price & plea for understanding tomorrow when the market changes (& so will the rate). Don’t get me wrong, there are still some solid RFP opportunities out there, but more & more I see this trend of needing the cheapest rate to hold for as long as possible --- it's just not sustainable. Will be interesting to see what happens in the market as we get closer to mid-summer, when market experts expect costs to rise.
