As part of its Investing in America tour, the Biden-Harris Administration declared a $5.8 billion investment in clean potable water and wastewater infrastructure. This funding is intended to ensure that every state and territory in the United States can access potable water. Under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act, the Environmental Protection Agency has allocated $22 billion for pure water. Contributing to the Justice40 Initiative, nearly half of this financing will be assigned to disadvantaged communities through grants or forgivable loans. The investment addresses critical requirements such as expanding access to clean water, replacing lead pipes, enhancing wastewater infrastructure, and removing PFAS contamination. https://lnkd.in/dD6pu2Hk

The U.S. government has significantly increased its investment in water infrastructure to address critical needs. The Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act of 2021 allocates $55 billion over several years, including $15 billion for replacing lead service lines and $4 billion for PFAS contamination. Despite this, an estimated $123 billion is needed annually to fully meet the nation’s water infrastructure requirements, creating a funding gap of around $40 billion. Enhanced federal funding through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act aims to bridge this gap, with private sector investments also playing a crucial role. #water #infrastructure #governmentspending #sustainability 💦

Inspiring to see such a historic #investment in the future of #water by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)! 💰 🚰 This landmark action takes an enormous step to revitalize our water infrastructure across the country. I'm increasingly focused on these issues given our work at Tahoe Lead Removal Project and San Francisco Baykeeper, and can't overstate the significance of this announcement! This $50 billion commitment is the single largest investment in water that the federal government has ever made. It will be distributed towards a range of projects with tangible impact for people across the nation, including: - replace lead pipes - protect critical bodies of water - build drinking water and wastewater systems - ensure resilience to climate change The lead issue is obviously one I'm personally passionate about. As cited by the EPA, there are still 6 to 10 million lead services lines in cities and towns across the country. This decisive action is a huge step to keep our communities protected from PFAS or “forever chemical” contamination, as well as provide jobs in the space. How we approach the #sustainability of our systems has evolved over the decades.
