When we cower to terrorists, they achieve exactly what they aim to do: instill fear, disrupt society, and control through intimidation. Terrorism’s power isn’t simply in the physical destruction it causes but in the psychological grip it holds on individuals and communities. If we allow fear to dictate our actions, compromise our values, or curtail our freedoms, we hand over control to those who seek to undermine us. Standing firm doesn’t mean ignoring risks but rather responding with measured strength and unity. This resilience reflects our collective resolve to protect our societies without sacrificing core values. By refusing to bow to fear, we weaken terrorism’s appeal and empower people everywhere to prioritise hope over hate. In the end, our courage—not our capitulation—defines us. It’s a sad sad reality when one of the most joyous occasions of the calendar year in Victoria is cancelled due to extremists. The Myer Christmas Windows Launch is something we have been involved in for 11 years. This is only second time in 68 years (first time due to a pandemic) that it hasn’t gone ahead. There is simply no justification. How many years have we been trying to rebuild the state, let alone bring more people into the city…only to be delivered this news yesterday. Should we just call off Christmas altogether and move on? What’s next? The Victorian government and police need to do more. It’s simply not good enough.
