Investment in farmers is crucial. Europe's farmers in particular face a dual challenge: delivering sustainable, high-yielding crops amidst a dwindling supply of healthy seeds. Currently, advancements in agricultural science offer hope. Hybrid breeding, for instance, leverages genome mapping, and creates disease-resistant, climate-resilient seeds that can enable global shipment and storage, ensuring staple crop supply. Governments and agencies must facilitate access to agricultural innovation as it's this support that can secure not only Europe's food supply but that of the world's, as well as future generations' well-being. #FoodSecurity #SustainableAgriculture #Farming

Government Provides 70 Combine Harvesters to Farmers Freetown, October 24, 2024 – In a significant step towards bolstering the agricultural sector, the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, was present at the Kissy Mechanical Workshop today to oversee the assembly of 70 combine harvesters. These machines, funded by the World Bank's Food System Resilience Program (FSRP), are intended to assist farmers during the current harvest season. The assembly of some of the harvesters has already been completed, with several units distributed to various farming communities. The remaining harvesters are expected to be fully assembled within the week and distributed soon after. The FSRP, one of the cornerstone projects under the Feed Salone initiative, aims to strengthen the country’s food systems. Project Manager Dr. Kepifri Larkoh expressed his commitment to supporting the Minister’s vision, stating, "I will support the Minister to achieve the goals of the Feed Salone initiative. I believe the FSRP is crucial for addressing hunger and poverty by building resilience in the food systems." Minister Kpaka took the opportunity to thank the World Bank for its continued support through the FSRP, noting that the program aligns with President Bio's vision for agricultural transformation. "From the onset, the World Bank has been a steadfast partner in our mission to ensure food security for all Sierra Leoneans," he remarked. The distribution of these harvesters is expected to improve the efficiency of harvesting operations, reduce post-harvest losses, and contribute to increased food production nationwide. The FSRP remains vital in Sierra Leone's efforts to strengthen its agricultural sector, focusing on sustainability and resilience to ensure long-term food security. https://lnkd.in/dWpaHWhe

Down to Earth Markets' #cunninghampark #farmersmarket and market manager, Kevin Sims, were recently profiled by Culinary Backstreets. This wonderful article by Queens correspondent, Dave Cook, highlights the market's special vibe, its connectedness with the local community and its diversity and range of offerings: https://bit.ly/4cdtKSD "“Very hands-on” is how Kevin describes the Cunningham market. In common with all the Down to Earth markets – which were created in response to industrial farming and all its attendant social and environmental concerns – Cunningham is home to smaller-scale operations. It’s “based on people,” Kevin adds, not on big business. The men and women staffing the tents might well have been growing, harvesting, baking, packaging or labeling their wares not too long before pulling up to the market." #downtoearthmkts #sustainableeating #localfood #CulinaryBackstreets #farmersmarket #agriculture #farming #eatlocal
