FUN FACT: 📺 Before the days of rectangular 16:9 HD TV's, we never saw the full films we watched on television. This is because our screens were in a 4:3 square, and cinemas only - had the full view. Black cinema bars helped squeeze the full picture in, but it would never fill the entire screen - agitating viewers a lot back then, and again in today's times. To fix, an operator working at any of the local broadcasters, would keep "the action" in the middle of your screen by manually (and tediously) panning and scanning a film before it goes out. 📽️ 🛰️ 📡 👇🏼👆🏼 The art was not to lose the story, as the sides plus lots of background had to be literally cut off. If not, those sides would run over the faces of the actors when not cutting them out completely. We see it with music videos in Reel Format every day now: An ear floating around but the lead singer nowhere in frame to be seen ... Social Reels (YT Shorts) flip the script on the old problem literally to 9:16, and should be added to deliverables for companies and broadcasters that regularly deliver the same video to Youtube (or TV) and also double them up as YT Shorts or Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok Reels. The default setting on Instagram complicates matters. AI can take care of it automatically with plugins, and our company can assist in a very affordable bulk-agreement to take the strain off your editor. We do it with care and we do it manually. It is often shrugged off because it's for the Socials, but producers, creatives, musos and marketing heads must remember that their online marketing content faces a much larger audience than the band, channel or service already has. Uploading a video 16:9 as-is, will almost always result in a Reel that looks shoddy or untidy. Especially in fast shots like action scenes where lots is happening. Panning and Scanning is a sleek value-add, but does take some time to set aside for each video that is ultimately income. It's your brand, marketing and product in one. The length of a video doesn’t necessarily determine the cost to create. There’s a common misconception that: → short video = cheaper to create → longer video = more expensive That’s not always true. Here’s an example: TV ads can cost hundreds of thousands. Sometimes millions. Yet most are 30’s long. Thats because they’re resource heavy and involve many creative elements, crew etc. (I give specific examples in this video) Yet you could commission a relatively simple interview that’s 2 mins in duration with some supporting footage to enhance the story, for just a few £k. Don’t overthink the length of the video. Focus on the impact you need to create, the story you want to tell, and the result you need for your budget.
