The C-5B Galaxy was an impressive and unforgettable visitor at our airport. This huge and heavy rival of the An-124 was designed by Lockheed a bit earlier than its Soviet counterpart. The late 60s design was successfully upgraded in 90s with new avionics and engines extending its operational life. Did you notice that many Lockheed's aircraft were named with reference to astronomy? Vega, Constellation, Hercules and many others? The biggest model of the Lockheed family followed this trend. What makes big transport airplanes like C-5 and An-124 so unique? It's not their takeoff weight or flight range. It's their unique design that lets them transport big things with easy loading simultaneously from the airplane's front and aft parts through huge openings. To facilitate the loading both airplanes can kneel on their landing gears lowering the ground clearance and letting big vehicles drive in. Both models have impressive loading systems and C-5 is even able to airdrop its load. A high wing mount provides the flat floor.
