Fifteen years ago I wrote the following article about collaboration, using Boeing as a primarily negative case study. They are now in a very challenging situation as a company, so much of which evidences a seriously problematic culture. Company performance is dependent on many things, some of which are not essential for every business. But trust is fundamental. It breeds openness, creativity, willingness to admit failure and learn from it, and thus progress towards excellence. To build trust, though, requires that leaders are seen to be safe, reliable and competent. All three seem in short supply in this giant company.
