Following a Europe-wide selection process, Alzchem Group AG has been awarded an investment grant of EUR 34.4 million by the EU Commission as part of the ASAP (“Act in Support of Ammunition Production”) funding instrument. Alzchem Group AG wants to use the funds over an investment period of two and a half years to increase the production capacity of nitroguanidine and to modernize and expand the existing facilities for the production of guanidine nitrate. Guanidine nitrate is a precursor of nitroguanidine, which is used in crop protection, as a propellant for airbags and, increasingly, in defense technology. Funding for the project was approved in principle and published today by the EU Commission, in consultation with the member states; the final allocation will be made upon conclusion of a corresponding grant agreement, expected to be signed in May 2024. #military #defense #defence #militaryleak #Alzchem https://lnkd.in/diB3Wnmq

Companies can outsource many tasks, but they cannot outsource #responsibility... especially that of #foodsafety. As a #Navy Nuclear #submarine #Veteran, I still think of the words of Admiral Hyman G. Rickover (who directed the original development of naval nuclear propulsion and controlled its operations for three decades!) “Responsibility is a unique concept... You may share it with others, but your portion is not diminished. You may delegate it, but it is still with you... If responsibility is rightfully yours, no evasion, or ignorance or passing the blame can shift the burden to someone else.” This perspective on responsibility came to mind as I read the following article. Looks like many stakeholders need to step up and take responsibility for this failure. Bryan Armentrout Francine L. Our new report describing the recent emergence of a highly antibiotic resistant strain of the rare ST-19 Acinetobacter baumannii in Ukraine and Georgia (and likely elsewhere in Europe) has just been published in EuroSurveillance. The fruits of a fantastic collaboration with our amazing colleagues in Ukraine and the Republic of Georgia. Strikingly, an ancestor of this strain also wreaked havoc among Allied and US soldiers during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts almost 2 decades ago, but this newly emerging strain is picking up even more potent antibiotic resistance genes. A classic example of the power of next-generation sequencing to unravel bacterial transmission and evolution, and the huge value in maintaining a robust and accurate bacterial repository, like the one maintained by the Multi-drug resistant organism Repository and Surveillance Network at the DHA’s Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. You can read all about it here:

OUCH. The new proposed legislation out of IL to regulate intoxicating hemp-derived THC products - the Hemp Consumer Product Act (HCPA)- is some of the strictest proposed state legislation of hemp-derived products I've seen yet. This HCPA provision sums it up well: "Cannabinoid hemp products shall be considered adulterated and shall not be sold within this State if there is the presence of synthetic cannabinoids, artificially derived cannabinoids, or cannabinoids created through isomerization, including tetrahydrocannabinol created through isomerization." [each of those terms is defined in the HCPA] Quick summary: * All D8 is out * All D9 not made "naturally" - out * THCA flower & prerolls - out * Any intoxicating cannabinoids made from CBD - out * Caps intermediate products (like distillate or emulsion) at no more than 0.3% total THC * Caps hemp products at 0.5mg total THC per serving and a 2mg total package * Requires a 25:1 non-intoxicating to intoxicating cannabinoid ratio * Anything that mimics THC would be considered cannabis (as that term is defined in the Cannabis Regulation & Tax Act) * Anything above the new THC limits would be considered cannabis * The CRTA will now include a committee of stakeholders to "evaluate the public health impacts, product formulations, manufacturing... and consumer safety standards for intoxicating THC products derived or produced from industrial hemp, and make recommendations to the General Assembly, the Governor, the [AG], and State regulatory agencies on a regulatory framework for the manufacture, distribution, and sale of hemp-derived THC consumer products within Illinois." This would put all of the Illinois stores carrying hemp-derived products - even those carrying only CBD, since most depend on revenue from their intoxicating hemp-derived products - out of business and would be the end of THC beverages in Illinois outside of dispensaries (where no one buys them). The "shall not be sold in the state" language also suggests that DTC sales would be prohibited. https://lnkd.in/gVcScbVm P.S. 50 new adult use licenses and 50 new infuser licenses will be issued under the draft amendments to the CRTA. So much packed into this thing! These are just some of the highlights. There was a press conference as well. More to come...

Russia, China request fish products safety information from Japan The Japanese side again attempted to convince WTO members of radiation safety of their foods after elimination of consequences of the incident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011 MOSCOW, July 1/ Representatives of the Chinese delegation supported the request of the Russian Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) to Japan for provision of information required to confirm safety of fish products from Japan, the watchdog said after participation in the meeting of the Committee on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures of the World Trade Organization (WTO). The Japanese side again attempted to convince WTO members of the radiation safety of their foods after elimination of consequences of the incident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in 2011 and lack of threat for human health. "Representatives of the Chinese delegation supported the request of Rosselkhoznadzor to the Japanese side on provision of comprehensive scientifically justified information required to confirm safety of fish products from Japan, including the opportunity for sampling on the location of water discharge from the NPP until the moment of its completion," the Russian regulator said. Russia applied an extraordinary measure and introduced restrictions of fish and seafood supplies from Japan in October 2023 to protect against risks occurring when foods with radioactive contamination enter the market, the authority added. #business #finance #financialservices

CeO2-based peelable gel for neutralization and skin decontamination toward chemical warfare agents Skin contamination with toxic agents remains a great concern and new decontamination systems able to eliminate the toxic from the skin and to degrade it need to be developed and evaluated. Cerium oxide nanoparticles appear promising in this context because of their catalysis properties resulting from their abundant surface defects, large number of surface hydroxyl groups and low redox potential between Ce3+ and Ce4+ cations. In this study, they have been incorporated into a gel that can easily be applied on the skin. This formulation is easier to handle than powder or liquid formulation and avoid dispersion or cross contamination. https://lnkd.in/gBZRCenk #cbrn #cbrne #decontamination #chemicalwarfare #decon CBRNE ATLANTIC BRIDGE (CAB) #hazmat #military #defense #skin #gel #toxic

🌍 Progress on AMR Commitments by G7 Countries 🌍 Over the past several months, ARMOR - Alliance for Reducing Microbial Resistance has worked alongside the G7 Research Group at the University of Toronto to assess the compliance of G7 countries with their commitments on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). 🔍 How is compliance measured? It's evaluated on a three-point scale: +1 (100%) – full compliance 0 (50%) – partial compliance or a work in progress −1 (0%) – non-compliance or action contrary to the commitment 📊 Key Findings: UK leads with 100% compliance across all four analyses. European Union follows with 88%, and United States at 75%. Italy had the lowest average compliance at 25%. The highest levels of commitment were achieved for the Push and Pull Incentives for Research and Development (2023), averaging 75% compliance. The lowest levels of compliance were seen for the Multi-Ministerial Action (2021) commitment, averaging just 38%. The purpose of these reports are to provide transparency and accountability to the commitments made at annual G7 summits. You can read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/g6HWR9Gv

🌍 Progress on AMR Commitments by G7 Countries 🌍 Having spent longer than I care to admit going through government websites, we are very happy to publish our latest report on how each of the G7 members has complied with the commitments they have made on AMR at the G7. Working alongside the G7 Research Group we did a systematic review of how each members actions compares to their commitments and scored them using a standardised method. Think your country has been scored to harshly (or to well!?) our analysis is a living document and we are open to updating it with new evidence. Our key takeaway is that whilst there has been some good progress, it generally doesn't live up to the ambition of the commitments that leaders are making and we now need to start seeing these commitments translate to action! The full report is available here: https://lnkd.in/g6HWR9Gv Thanks to John Kirton, Madeline Koch and Brittaney Warren for your support and guidance and to our team of analysts Neha Suresh, Garrett Ehinger, Berke Ç., Natalie Kiilu and Andreea P. for all of your hard work on pulling this together.
