Turkey Bolsters Airlift Capabilities with C-130J Acquisition Turkey has significantly enhanced its airlift capabilities with the acquisition of 12 ex-RAF C-130J Super Hercules aircraft. These aircraft, despite being brand new, were mothballed due to UK defense budget cuts. The deal, finalized recently, follows a similar acquisition by Bangladesh last year. This strategic move by Turkey aligns with its ongoing efforts to modernize its military and strengthen its regional influence. The C-130J, a versatile aircraft known for its long-range and heavy-lift capabilities, will be a valuable asset to the Turkish Air Force. However, while Turkey is making strides in acquiring new military equipment, it continues to face challenges in upgrading its existing fleet. The long-delayed C-130J upgrade program, initiated in 2011, remains plagued by issues, highlighting broader challenges in the country's defense modernization efforts. These challenges are symptomatic of a larger issue in the region, where economic considerations often take precedence over military readiness. This trend, while understandable, can have significant implications for national security. As regional tensions rise, it is imperative for nations to strike a balance between economic development and military preparedness.

The Swiss Federal Office for Defence Procurement armasuisse has announced a tender for new medium-range ground-based air defence system (GBAD). As Switzerland’s current air defence arsenal nears the end of its operational life, armasuisse has called on three leading defence manufacturers to submit their proposals. These include Germany’s Diehl Defence, a consortium of Norway’s Kongsberg and the USA’s Raytheon, and France’s MBDA. The deadline for submission is set for mid-July 2024. This strategic move is part of the Swiss Army’s broader “Army 2025” initiative, aiming to address the growing technological advancements in aircraft that can engage from higher altitudes and longer distances. The current systems, primarily short-range, are deemed insufficient against such evolving threats. Israel Ministry of Defense has agreed to a deal worth 560 Million Euros to sell the Barak MX Integrated Air Defense System produced by IAI to Slovakia. This is an important deal and follows deals to sell Arrow to Germany, David's Sling to Finland and also possibly develop an air defense for Greece. Israel's IAI Elta subsidiary has also sold MMR radars to Czech and Slovakia, these are the similar radars used with the Iron Dome system. What this means overall is there Europe's skies are increasingly defended with Israeli technology, proven air defense systems, some of them developed with the US (Arrow and David's Sling). Israel's Ministry of Defense said today: "Marking a significant milestone in defense cooperation, Israel and Slovakia have finalized their largest-ever defense export agreement, valued at approximately 560 million euros. This landmark deal, orchestrated by the International Defense Cooperation Directorate of the IMOD (SIBAT), will further strengthen the bond between the two nations and enhance Slovakia's defense capabilities." Col Kunwar Varun Singh Tanwar, VSM Absolute indigenization is almost impossible. In essence it means indigenization of critical technologies. For reference, in global arms import ranking, USA is 11th at 2.8% global share. Other major arms manufacturing/exporting nations are importers as well. However, in their case import of critical technology is rare. It is mostly raw materials or subsystems or low end items in the value chain. #india #aatmanirbharbharat #makeinindia #export #import
An interesting and frank take on Atma Nirbhar. A pragmatic comparison with the flagship ALH reveals a mixed picture of self-reliance and reliance on foreign components. Indigenisation of the ALH - The ALH program, initiated in 1979, was aimed at creating a multirole helicopter with significant indigenous capabilities. However, it has faced challenges in achieving complete self-sufficiency. Reports indicate that about **more than 50% of its components are imported**, particularly critical systems like the engine, which is the Turbomeca TM333-2B2, sourced from France. - While the Indian government has emphasized increasing domestic production, the ALH still integrates numerous imported parts, including avionics and materials, which reflects a broader trend seen in many countries where complete indigenisation is difficult to achieve due to technological and economic constraints. Comparison with Other Countries United States - The U.S. has a robust military-industrial complex but still imports components for various systems. For instance, between 2018 and 2022, the U.S. imported **365 engines, 271 missiles, and 50 naval weapons**. This indicates that even with a strong domestic manufacturing base, reliance on foreign technology remains significant. France - Similar to the U.S., France also imports a substantial number of military components. In the same timeframe, France imported **367 aircraft, 108 engines, and 14 missiles**. This highlights that even established military powers depend on a mix of domestic and foreign sources for their defense needs. Russia - Russia, historically reliant on its own defense industry, has also engaged in co-production agreements with other countries, such as India with the BrahMos missile. This collaboration shows that even nations with strong defense capabilities recognize the value of foreign partnerships to enhance their military technologies. Conclusion The ALH's indigenisation level, while commendable, reflects a common reality in global defense manufacturing: complete self-sufficiency is rare. Countries like the U.S. and France, despite their advanced military-industrial capabilities, also rely on foreign components. The trend towards indigenisation is a strategic goal for many nations, including India, but it often coexists with necessary imports to ensure technological advancement and operational effectiveness.
