Another Friday experience of how a complex product can be the root of failure... 📉 Last week, while I was stuck in bed with covid 🤒 , I had to buy some gift vouchers for an employee who was retiring 🎁 . She'd given 20 years of service, so instead of a carriage clock we opted for gift vouchers to let her choose. Expectation: Order online, get the voucher on email and print it off. Experience: Order 2 vouchers (as the value was too much for 1). On receipt we find they cannot be printed. The voucher can be used in some online stores, though some you had to exchange the value for the store specific vouchers, and others allowed in store spend (if you downlod the app). The payment method in store varied by Android vs iOS, and to use online you may need to say your paying by VISA not gift card. The option to exchange for store specific vouchers wasn't working. To find out how to spend the money, took me 2 hours, not WHERE to spend but HOW!! I worked in the gift card industry for years, and this baffled me. I rang the supplier, explained and the wonderful customer service agent processed the refund, but will I even consider them again? Not at all. Great customer service or not, the product wasn't feasable. If you don't consider how people use your product, it will likely fail. The same goes for Data Analysis. Just because you understand it, or you accept limitations of what is possible/cheap/available, doesn't mean your audience will. Your 'product' will fail, usage will be low, and perception will be tainted for ever. Keep it clear, simple and to the point! Happy weekend
