Is your vehicle going to be gathering dust over the summer? 🚐 If your vehicle only operates during term-time, being left alone all summer could present some issues, namely the battery going flat whilst the engine is off for so long. To prevent this, there’s a couple of things you can do! You might choose to have someone go in and run the engine for 15 minutes a week to keep the battery alive, or take it for a longer drive for a more complete charge. There’s also the option of a trickle charger, if nobody is available to run the engine. Bear in mind that this will need charging every so often- however, solar powered options are available that will sustain the battery if the bus will be kept outside for the duration of the summer. ☀ It's also advisable to get the vehicle checked over by a mechanic at least two weeks before it’ll be needed on the roads again- that way, you’ve got plenty of time to arrange repairs or maintenance and you’ve saved yourself the hassle of having to rush! As the chilly months roll in, your vehicle's battery might be feeling the freeze! 🥶 Don't let a dead battery leave you stranded in the cold. Here’s why and when you should consider a battery replacement: 1️⃣ Cold Weather Challenges: Winter temperatures can drastically reduce battery efficiency, making it harder for your car to start. 2️⃣ Age Matters: If your battery is over 3 years old, it’s time to pay attention. Imagine you’re getting ready for a long drive on the weekend, chances are you’ll need to hit the fuel station before jumping onto the highway. You pull into the station, and with hundreds of miles ahead of you, you plug in the nozzle and fill your car’s 15-gallon tank to the very top, and you don’t expect you’ll need to visit another station for at least another 400 miles. After you’ve gone along for 300 miles, you peek down at your fuel gauge and it’s...empty?? Frantic, you hit the nearest off-ramp and roll into another fuel station. By the time you’ve reached your destination, you can’t help but notice your car seems to have used significantly more fuel than it was supposed to, or did it? What if you looked out your rear-view mirror on the road and saw a trail of unburnt gasoline coming out of your car? Fuel that your car supposedly needed in order to run on a full tank. And if that’s not enough, what if you then got mail from the fuel station fining you for the amount of gas your car didn’t actually use? Of course, this all seems rather ridiculous when talking about putting gas in your car, but this kind of experience is more commonly seen when taking a different form: electrical power. https://hubs.li/Q02PSGts0

With electric vehicles on their way into the shop, technicians need to be aware of the risk of battery fires, especially when they can burn hotter than a typical blaze and reignite without warning. “Ultimately, it all starts with the lithium-ion cells and ensuring that they're designed correctly for the correct usage in the field,” said Lisa McKenzie, president and general manager for the Battery Power Systems Unit at the Freudenberg Group's E-Power Systems (FEPS). “A lot of times these fires happen because the cells are used too aggressively, or they're used in areas that they really shouldn't be used.” For more on how these incidents occur and how they can be prevented, see below. #truckingindustry #electricvehicle #safety #fleetmaintenance
