Patient education is one of the most critical aspects of healthcare Yet, we continue to fall short in ways that are truly perplexing. How can we expect patients to learn, absorb, and collaborate with their care teams when they are overwhelmed, scared, or in pain? It's unrealistic to think that someone processing a life-changing diagnosis or recovering from surgery can immediately understand complex medical information, especially when we don’t take the time to make it clear and accessible. As a parent of a dyslexic child, I see the challenges of learning every day. My child is in the "read to learn" phase, and it's been a struggle. But I know that educational best practices exist. Teachers are trained to use methods like teach-back, multisensory learning, and other techniques to maximize student engagement and understanding. They know that different learners need different approaches. So why do we, in healthcare, neglect these principles when it comes to patient education? Especially in high-stakes situations like discharge planning or outpatient care, where understanding can literally be a matter of life and death? Instead, we often blame the patient when they don’t follow their care plan, labeling them as "non-adherent" or "non-compliant." It’s time to shift our perspective. Just as we work to support students who learn differently, we must apply those same principles to healthcare. We need to meet patients where they are, using teach-back methods, visual aids, and plain language to ensure they truly understand their care. Only then can we build a system where patients feel supported, informed, and empowered to take charge of their health.

Negative outcomes during the perinatal period for black moms and infants are disproportionately high. Fathers do, can and should be the first and strongest advocates for their families. We can support mom throughout the pregnancy by encouraging healthy foods and avoiding things like smoking and mitigating stress. We can also plan and advocate for her and baby throughout the birth and postpartum. The key to this is intentionality. Present Pillars Foundation and our partners will help dads answer some key questions: 1. Is the obvious question. What are the issues that are leading to poor outcomes? 2. What steps can I take to help ensure my families safety and wellbeing during pregnancy, birth and postpartum? 3. How does managing my own health play a role in the health and outcomes for my family? 4. How can I help spread the word?
