Action for Trustee Racial Diversity UK for Trustee Racial Diversity (now a registered charity, Board Racial Diversity UK) exists to improve the racial diversity of not-for-profit trustee boards and governing bodies to reflect the proportion of minoritised ethnic individuals in the UK. Only 8% of trustees of UK charities are from Black and Asian backgrounds, despite making up 14% of the population in England and Wales, and less than 3% of all charity trustees are under 30. Boards will never be truly diverse and inclusive until the face of their leadership changes and the people at the top – trustees, governors and particularly Chairs - are more representative of the people they support and can bring their diverse experiences and perspectives to the table. Following a consultation with its target group, Board Racial Diversity UK have designed a new programme - Pathways to Trusteeship - aimed at increasing awareness, understanding, and representation of trusteeship among young people from Black, Asian, and minoritised ethnic communities. The programme pairs 18-35 year olds with host organisations, provides practical experience, mentoring, and leadership training to prepare them for governance roles. Small International Development Charities Network (SIDCN) is thrilled to announce our participation in the Pathways to Trusteeship programme! 🎉 As part of this innovative pilot initiative, we are proud to welcome Ubbah Othman, a talented young individual who will shadow our board over the next 10 months. This partnership is a step toward nurturing the next generation of leaders in governance and the charity sector. The Fireside Chat with Lauren Weymouth yesterday focused on the relationship between the CEO and Chair... I thought I knew a lot, yet I learnt so much more about Joga that I had no idea about. To go from no GCSEs to early retirement, his journey of #leadership is so inspiring. He emphasised the role of 'others' in his success - the support that we receive along the way and sometimes fail to recognise until much later in life. * Building strong relationships can't be easy, especially when we have so much that makes us different. * Joga and I have completely different leadership styles yet we both agree that 'our people' come first. * His expertise comes from the education sector with strong management acumen and * my expertise comes from the charity sector with strength in community development. * I value the mentoring I have received from him and other trustees over the years. * 'Support' from our Board and Staff Team is crucial to how we lead & function in each of our roles. * Diversity of perspective is down to our lived experience and thinking process, which will never be the same. * There is so much more to #diversity and #inclusion than what meets the eye. * Misalignment between leaders can hurt an entire organisation. 🎯 Key points for #charities to reflect on: 1️⃣ How are your leaders collaborating? 2️⃣ What are your shared values? 3️⃣ Are you moving forward? ‘What Makes a Great Charity’? 😊 🏆📢 Here is what CARMEL MOLLOY of NonProfit Alliance had to say; So, what does being a “great charity” mean to me?     To me the greatest sign of a thriving and successful charitable organisation is in its leadership. Not just leadership at the upper echelons, but leadership that cascades through the very veins of your organisation, at every level, not just around the Board and/or management tables.      Whilst leadership at the CEO/Executive and Board level is ultimately responsible for defining the vision and purpose, and setting the strategic direction of your organisation, leadership needs to be evident – and implemented - at every level for a charity to realise it’s potential.    Truly great charity leaders model and nurture great leadership. They seek and find strengths and greatness in others. They create a leadership culture where staff members, beneficiaries, and stakeholders understand their worth and the valuable contribution they make to realising a social impact legacy that is far greater than any one person, or group of individuals, could achieve alone.     And collectively they make the world a better place.    Great leaders have a presence about them that embraces and embodies the purpose of the organisation they lead. Calling all non-profit governance nerds.. (I know you're out there... right??): The Netherlands offers a fairly unique (and quite useful) two-tier governance structure for non-profits consisting of a Board AND a Supervisory Board. At Systemic Justice, we've just switched to this model. Now why might one want want to do that? Most non-profits in Europe have a Management Board / Board of Directors as their formal governance entity. Save for small organisations where the Board runs the day-to-day of the organisation, most Boards empower an Executive Director with a power of attorney or appoint a management team to run things. So even though they still hold operational powers, Boards often increasingly move to a position of oversight rather than doing anything hands on. The Dutch system is special in that it allows to formalise this oversight function.
