Barbell Back Squat w/Heels Elevated The back squat was a staple lower body movement for me for many years. And I while I got insanely strong, I also developed chronic lower back pain. In searching for the root cause of that discomfort, I came to understand something profound. A tiny minority of people actually have the prerequisite mobility to do this movement without creating compensations and postural distortions elsewhere in their bodies. So now, it’s still a solid movement, but it’s something we build up to...not dive head first into. And even then, a heel elevation version usually comes first, to help open up space in the ankle.
