In the past, parents lived their lives and brought their kids with them too. Something's changed though in our society. There are stark differences in parenting across cultures. I won’t pretend to know them all— but ive summarized some general things here: → Western society tends to favor adults in society AND family units cater to kids. → The rest of the world tends to mold society to cater to all demographics AND family units cater to adults. What do I mean by this exactly? In other words: → The US has zero support for parents AND parents’ lives revolve around their kids. → The rest of the world has real support for parents AND parents live their lives and bring their kids with them. See the difference? This post isn’t about weighing the merits of this particular difference. But moreso about how it wasn’t always this way in the US. It used to be closer aligned with the rest of the world. I’m not here to break down why. But to highlight one SPECIFIC thing: We seem to have lost our ability to transfer our values to our kids. I see it with my own parenting: → when I reach for the iPad at the beginning of dinner out with the kids Would I rather interact and talk to them? Hell yeah! To anyone without kids… you’re like… so do that! As a parent, you know what I'm talking about here. It’s not so simple. IYKYK, right? I came across this video and my gut reaction was negative. But I watched the whole thing and thought about it for a while. Now, you might say he’s yelling which is no good. Is he, though? His voice is definitely raised. But is he angrily shouting? I’m not so sure based on just the video. He’s shaking his finger in his kid’s face. → That’s no good either. I personally would not do that… and I don’t recommend it. The rationalization may be it’s a tactic to get the kid to LISTEN. It may be effective in the moment but does carry some risks to it. BUT the question you have to ask yourself is this how you always are with your kid? If you are…you are. And you’re not alone. If you’re not, you’re not. And you’re not alone. If this is literally the first time you did something like this to your kid, I’d argue the risk for harm is low. Trauma is caused by repeated behavior since that’s how modeling works: → kids observing repeated behavior. Doing this ONE time is unlikely to cause real harm for a child. But oh boy does this kid now understand the severity… and more importantly… → the value of RESPECTING his mom. ⚡ If you want to get taste of how to get more TIME, JOY, and AVOID that parent GUILT along your dad journey, sign up for my newsletter in my profile or in the link via comments below. Talking about how to imbibe servitude into our parenting styles as much as possible is important. It has many benefits for the parents, children and family as a whole. Below is how servitude can be imbibed into Permissive Parenting: A. Empowering Choices: Permissive parents can empower children to make choices about how they want to contribute to their communities, fostering a sense of autonomy and ownership. B. Modeling Generosity: Permissive parents can model generosity and compassion through their own actions, inspiring children to follow suit. C. Encouraging Reflection: Permissive parenting can provide opportunities for children to reflect on the impact of their actions and develop a deeper understanding of social issues.

Today’s mothers are often shaped by their own childhood experiences, combined with input from social media, friends, and other parents in their child's playgroups. Even if you believe you can handle the challenges of parenting, it’s natural to worry about meeting your own expectations. Why is modern parenting often so stressful? ::::In most of human history, a child lived within eyesite of their grandparents, aunts, uncles and other extended family members. Although the biological parents often had the final parenting decision, many other adults took part in the key parenting decisions for the child. This took a lot of pressure off the biological parents because many adults helped shape the adult that child would become. In modern times, many children have virtually all of their parenting decisions made by their parents. These parents fiercely guard their right to make virtually every parenting decision. They don’t realize this will later cause tremendous stress when the child grows up and struggles in certain areas. The parents second guess many of their decisions and often blame themselves or each other. A better strategy is to have additional wise adults that are part of the decision making process. The biological parents can let those others make some less important decisions and listen to their advice on important ones.#parenting #care #knowyourself

Working moms - looking for your next read that paints a picture of parenting that does NOT match the perfectly organized (and disturbingly clutter free) homes and perfectly patient parents that pepper our social media feeds? The book "Screaming on the Inside" by Jessica Grouse (NYT parenting writer) should be on your short list. Jessica takes a realistic look at how we got to this point in working parenthood - and why it feels (and really is) just so darn hard most of the time. She would claim that the current expectations of parenting are unachievable... and in many ways I agree. Good news - she offers some ideas about how we can all do it differently, including admitting that there is no one size fits all approach that works for every family, child and parent. She offers tangible ideas about how we can influence our local and national politics to support working parents AND the children we are raising to be future contributing members of society. Mostly she offers validation that this moment is very, very hard - and we hold some of the keys to making it easier for us and future generations. Read on and let me know what you think! #jessicagrouse #parentingadvice #workingparents

Modern Parenting: Evolution or Fad? Parenting has always mirrored societal changes, often influenced by trends and fads. But while society evolves, children remain remarkably consistent in their needs. So, do certain approaches truly stand the test of time, or are they just fleeting phases? I was a parent in the 80s and 90s when “to parent” was not a verb. Nowadays, parenting is a thing. It has names such as gentle parenting and countless variations, but has this made us better parents?
