If you’re trying to decide whether or not you should have another baby, you’re likely juggling a heavy mental load. Sometimes this choice is taken away from us, which comes with its own emotional labor. But if we do have the choice, it is a big decision, fueled by SO many factors. Moms often grapple with the decision, unsure of how to make the right choice for everyone in the family. The invisible load of deciding whether to have another baby includes: 〰 Discussing financial readiness 〰 Reflecting on personal goals 〰 Assessing physical and mental health 〰 Considering the age gap between children 〰 Weighing childcare options 〰 Evaluating support systems 〰 Getting on the same page as partner 〰 Assessing the impact on career advancement 〰 Evaluating housing situation 〰 Considering age/ fertility 〰 Weighing the impact on existing children 〰 Evaluating the impact on relationship Not to mention other important considerations like: 〰 Confronting previous trauma 〰 Fertility challenges 〰 Pressure from society 〰 Conflict in relationship 〰 Strained family dynamics It can feel overwhelming to face this decision. But a mom therapist can help you work through the logical and emotional factors, tune into your values, understand your motivations for wanting or not wanting more children, and process your journey toward a choice that feels right to you. We offer virtual therapy support for moms across Canada and the United States, serving you at every step of your journey. Our mom therapists understand what you’re going through. They can help with: 〰 Evaluating your decisions 〰 Tuning into your values 〰 Embracing flexibility in your ideal family 〰 Opening up productive conversations with your partner 〰 And more! I’ve been holding onto this post for months because I don’t want to guilt or shame caregivers. As a mom, I know how hard it is to balance everything and be fully present! Babies are deeply feeling humans, and from day one, they are absorbing the world around them through their nervous systems. In those early days, they are starting to form beliefs about themselves and their surroundings. Infants depend on eye contact, physical touch, co-regulation, and emotional “mirroring” to feel safe and connected. This connection is vital because, for them, it’s about survival. They rely on us for everything in those first months and years. If we are constantly pulled in different directions by our phones, work, or other demands, it can affect how they start to understand relationships, self-worth, and their place in the world. This isn’t just a parental issue, though. Our broader culture and systems often make it incredibly difficult for caregivers to prioritize this connection. Caregivers today are stretched way too thin, often lacking the support they truly need. None of us will get it right all the time. Distractions, mental health challenges, and life stressors are inevitable, but acknowledging their potential impact helps us better support these children with compassion and understanding. A child whose early caregivers were frequently disconnected for any number of reasons, might show signs of that experience in their behavior and could impact long-term mental health. Early childhood is such a key time for laying the foundation of long-term mental health, and we all—caregivers, communities, and systems—play a role in nurturing that foundation.
