HIP completes first STS Liquid Cargo Operation Hambantota International Port (HIP) has completed its first commercial ship-to-ship (STS) transfer operation for liquid cargo, marking another major milestone in the port’s expanding capabilities. The operation, carried out in collaboration with Singapore-based company Shipload Maritime to facilitate Laugfs vessel ‘Gas Challenger,’ highlights HIP’s commitment to becoming a key player in liquid cargo handling within the region. In this landmark operation, HIP facilitated the transfer of 3,170 metric tons (MT) of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from vessel IVAN6 to vessel GAS CHALLENGER, the latter operated by Laugfs Holdings. This operation comes at a crucial time, as LPG demand continues to outpace supply, and the transfer was expedited to support distribution to the Laugfs facility in Colombo. The partnership with Shipload Maritime enables HIP to offer STS services that were previously only accessible in the Maldives in this region. HIP’s STS services now make Sri Lanka a viable alternative for liquid cargo transfers, opening up a new chapter for the port whose expanding service offerings continue to meet growing needs of the region’s energy and cargo sectors. In the photo below, the four Svitzer tugs are assisting the berthing of an LNG Carrier at the First Gen Interim Offshore LNG Terminal in Batangas, Philippines. Given Svitzer's focus on continually improving the Svitzer customer experience through "deep listening" and the sophisticated technology it has deployed, FGEN LNG is confident that it will never be left 'high and dry', a much older phrase first used in print in the London Times in 1796, meaning stranded, without help or recovery. 📢 MSC took delivery of the MSC MARIACRISTINA last week. The 16,200 teu LNG-powered vessel is the first of six MARIC-designed "Maxi-Neo-Panamax" vessels that will be delivered to MSC by CSSC Group's Dalian Shipyard (DSIC). 🌐 ⏱️ Going forward, the majority of MSC's newbuildings in this vessel class will be LNG dual-fuel powered.   📅 Meanwhile, South Korea's Hyundai Samho shipyard delivered the 8,048 teu CMA CGM POINTE-NOIRE. It's the second in a series of nine LNG-powered "Hyundai 8000 LNG" type vessels that CMA CGM ordered in February 2022 for about $119m per ship. 🛳️   📊 These vessels bring the total number of LNG-powered Container Ships to be delivered so far in 2024 up to 48. Leveraging U-Ming's experience and expertise, the collaborative efforts with ITOCHU are expected to play a leading role in driving decarbonisation in international shipping. U-Ming’s understanding, implementation, and commercialisation of dual fuel technology has allowed the company to build strong relationships with major shippers, shipyards, and shipping companies which will play a key role in advancing ammonia as a fuel. This week on Bunkerspot, a bumper #shipbuilding contract in Asia! AW Shipping, a joint venture between ADNOC Logistics and Services and Services and Wanhua Chemical Group Group, placed an order for nine dual fuelled very large #ethane carriers and two very large ammonia carriers with Jiangnan Shipyard in China. According to AW Shipping, the total cost of for the VLECs is around $1.4 billion while the contract for the VLACs is priced at approximately $250 million. The agreement includes an option for two additional VLACs at the same price. Carnival Corporation issued a vote of confidence for #LNG as a marine fuel. The cruise giant announced an order with FINCANTIERI for three new LNG-fuelled ships for its Carnival Cruise Line brand. The 230,000 gross registered tonne vessels will be delivered in the summers of 2029, 2031 and 2033, respectively. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) Authority and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) shortlisted two consortia, led by Keppel’s Infrastructure Division and Sembcorp-SLNG respectively, that will now move on to provide #engineering, safety and emergency response studies for an #ammonia project on Jurong Island covering power generation and bunkering. In other news, the number of bunker calls at the Port of #Gibraltar during the first five months of the year increased by 6%; Banle Group announced it had completed its inaugural bunkering in India earlier this month; and World Kinect’s Q2 financial results are a reflection of a wider market price calibration in recent months, with its income falling in Q2 2024 by 47.5% year-on-year. And finally, Petrospot Limited is delighted to announce the appointment of Reporter Tom Barlow-Brown. 🇬🇷 🚢 Greek shipowners invest 13.6 billion US dollars for 52 new LNG carriers Greek shipowners are consolidating their position among the elite “players” of the LNG carrier market, implementing an expanded shipbuilding program that will increase their fleet in the coming years, according to Naftemporiki. According to data shared with “Naftemporiki” by Veson Nautical, Greek shipowners have 52 LNG carriers on order, worth 13.6 billion US dollars.
