What is Epilepsy? Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain that causes seizures. These seizures are not caused by a temporary underlying medical condition such as a high fever. Epilepsy can affect people in very different ways. This is because there are many causes and many different kinds of seizures. Some people may have multiple types of seizures or other medical conditions in addition to epilepsy. The way a seizure looks depends on the type of seizure a person is experiencing. Some seizures can look like staring spells. Other seizures can cause a person to collapse, shake, and become unaware of what’s going on around them. Seizures can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Everyone with a brain might experience a seizure at least once in their lifetime. Recognizing and assisting someone having a seizure is our collective responsibility. The first aid for seizures can be remembered with three simple words: Stay safe, side. Stay: Stay with the person and keep calm. Safe: Ensure the person is safe by clearing the area of harmful objects. Side: Turn the person onto their side to maintain a clear airway. This Week is also National Epilepsy Week. What is Epilepsy? Epilepsy is a common condition where sudden bursts of electrical activity in the brain cause seizures or fits. How do you deal with a seizure? 1. move dangerous objects away and gently protect the head with a folded coat or your hands 2. note the time and duration of the seizure 3. Call 999 if seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes, they have a second seizure, they have become injured or is there first seizure. 4. After the Seizure check for breathing.
