🌿🔥 Turn Your BBQ into an Eco-Friendly Experiment! 🔥🌿 As the weather warms up, it's the perfect time for a BBQ and a little bit of science! 🍖🔬 Last Monday, we dove into some fascinating biochar experiments at Franck Castel's place, using something as simple as walnut shells. We explored two methods: gasification and pyrolysis. Today, I want to share the easiest method with you – pyrolysis. It’s so simple, you can try it at your next BBQ ! Here's how: 1) Grab a small metal can and fill it with dry, brown waste (like walnut shells). 2) Place it on the grill while you BBQ. 3) Voila ! You've created biochar ! Check out the pictures below to see our process in action. But what do you do with #biochar ? After inoculating it with some organic matter, you can use it in your plant pots to boost soil health and improve the environment. Give it a try and let us know how it goes ! Share your results and pictures in the comments – we’d love to see them ! Also, don’t miss Franck’s insightful article on biochar : https://lnkd.in/epjKWX3f Happy BBQing and experimenting! 🌱🍔 #fun #experiment #DIY #BBQ #soilimprovement #carbonsequestration

A new one for me this morning. A "narrative review" of the science of cluster thinning. This is a format of scientific article I've never experienced before, and might be a bit more accessible to those without scientific background, so definitely worth checking out. The findings back up my experience, that the effect of thinning fruit is more often than not either mixed, ineffective, or counterproductive to the aims of creating a "more concentrated" or "more balanced" wine, especially in warm and hot climates. I'm not saying crop thinning isn't always necessary, but there are better, and much cheaper, ways of reducing crop to desired levels. When possible, especially for red wines, I prefer to try to moderate berry size by implementing water stress between set and veraison to slow down cell division/expansion in the developing berries. But, not all sites and seasons allow for this strategy, sometimes necessitating crop thinning as a last resort. My opinion is, if thinning is necessary in reds, a green thin evens up the ripeness of the remaining crop by removing bunches that flowered later, and thus are behind in development. In a cool climate where extended hangtime is not always possibe, this is of particular importance. Later thinning also reduces the enlargement of the remaining fruit as the vine compensates to a reduced cropload. How and when do you remove crop when your estimates come in over targets?
