Mining Magazine’s Post

A new partnership between the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Argonne National Laboratory and local miner Talon Metals Corp. is looking to extract iron from nickel mine tailings in a bid to increase domestic battery production. Speaking with Mining Magazine, Albert Lipson, group leader, separations and bioprocessing at Argonne said: "Talon is trying to set up a nickel mine in the US. And what they find is that they have alot of iron [waste] that they can use in LFPs, which contain iron and need a high purity source of iron. Essentially, the goal of the project is to figure out how to get that iron instead of it being waste."
