On the occasion of Belgium’s EU Presidency, Royal Higher Institute for Defence organised a Maritime Security Seminar on April 16th, with the aim of providing concrete reflections and recommendations to the presidency for the EU's maritime security policy. Senior researcher at CMS, Katja Lindskov Jacobsen, was invited as a speaker to share insights from her research on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea. Her key points were as follows: Both piracy and efforts to address piracy need to be perceived in a wider context, since piracy often can be linked to other criminal activities. Therefore, anti-piracy needs to be regarded as part of a wider effort to maritime security. The nations in the region have concrete perceptions of the challenges of maritime safety which need to be taken into consideration. When addressing maritime security, the geopolitical dynamics play an important role – in Sahel as well as the coastal nations bordering the Gulf of Guinea.

🌍 Strengthening Gulf of Guinea Security with Global Collaboration 🌊 In a robust display of international cooperation, West African nations recently joined forces with international allies in Exercise Grand African Nemo to tackle maritime crime across the Gulf of Guinea. Spanning over 5,700 kilometers from Senegal to Angola, this exercise united 28 nations, deploying 55 naval units, 12 aircraft, and specialized maritime personnel to address critical threats, including piracy, smuggling, and illegal fishing. With the growing complexity of these threats, enhancing regional security measures through exercises like these is crucial. Trident Group America is proud to support these global security efforts by offering advanced maritime security solutions, anti-piracy protection, and risk assessment services that bolster security operations for maritime zones. Through real-time intelligence, operational expertise, and tailored protection strategies, we help maritime operators and authorities safeguard their assets and personnel. As Ghana’s Chief of Naval Staff, Issah Adam Yakubu, highlighted, the exercise focused on building trust, information-sharing, and interoperability—key to creating a safer maritime space in the Gulf of Guinea. The exercise also supports the Yaoundé Architecture, an interregional maritime security initiative founded in 2013 that organizes this maritime area into five zones, each coordinated by Maritime Multinational Coordination Centers. At Trident Group America, we are dedicated to enhancing global maritime security by working alongside international partners to strengthen response capabilities and protect critical maritime routes worldwide. #MaritimeSecurity #GulfOfGuinea #GrandAfricanNemo #TridentGroupAmerica #PiracyPrevention #MaritimeProtection #NavalSecurity #AntiPiracy
