Will 2024 Be a Bad Year for the Food Industry? The food industry has often been considered as a “sure bet”, since the old adage, “No matter what happens, everyone’s gotta eat”. However, with supply chain disruptions, COVID’s economic consequences, the enduring labor shortage and growing awareness of the value food has for physical and mental health, the food industry is facing greater pressures than ever before in recent years. Growth is predicted to be slower than expected, with continuing market challenges for smaller producers and restaurants, as investors adjust expectations for smaller returns. https://lnkd.in/esW2tDvJ #foodindustry #laborshortage #supplychain #economics #food #2024 #covid #mentalhealth #physicalhealth #industry #economy

What’s the secret to moving nutritious food and produce around the world? “The cold chain,” says Christina Wang, MBA ’23, “enables us to introduce diversity and abundance into our diet.” Working as a food investor, Wang became fascinated with the cold chain, a refrigerated #supplychain intricately linking growers, distributors, retailers, and consumers on a global scale. But when this supply chain falters, Wang says the repercussions are felt far and wide. Like other supply chains, the cold chain proved susceptible to disruptions during the pandemic. “Between the revenue loss from spoiled food and the costs associated with that extra dry ice I now [had] to budget for in the deliveries, I couldn't help but wonder, how can we make this better?” Wang recalls. Wang saw a chance for a paradigm shift in the way we envision the future of the cold chain. “The pandemic gave us an opportunity to rethink and reimagine what the future cold chain should look like,” she says. “Think about the whole ecosystem. Only then will we be able to provide freshness to all — resiliently, sustainably, and equitably.” This video is from LOWkeynotes: Student presentations on ideas that change lives, organizations, and the world. https://bit.ly/3vf24Nv

I’m eating breakfast and this milk package made me think of the good effects understanding your double materiality can have. Here is the impact report from clover milk that I read with my morning cereal. https://lnkd.in/gFMXmXp9 We did not write this particular impact report, but I’m currently working with a T&L company to do this and I really believe in the process. Until we stop asking, “Where are the velocities great?” and “What can I make for cheap that people also consume a ton of?” we will continue to get more of what we’ve always gotten and grocery stores will continue to bulge with massive processed food isles and so many more “functional” sparkling beverages than are necessary. 🙄 Time to start asking better questions. Questions like: What does nature need to thrive and how can I work with nature to create something better for consumers? What would help our farmers and how can I help create a market that prioritizes them? How can I bring people closer to their food and who is growing it? How can I help people understand the true impact of their food choices, both for their health and the health of our planet?

I learned of GoodMeat company at a recent conference. You can eat chicken without killing chickens. Meet Ian, the chicken. Convention meat production: *** 80% of antibiotic use *** more emissions than all cars *** leading cause of destruction of rain forests They used a handful of cells from Ian the chicken and figured out a way to to continue growing them infinitely. The cell is from a feather. The first plate of Good Meat chicken nuggets was $200,000 through further developments they were able to produce for $10,000 and most lately $20. Imagine what can happen if we can lower the production cost to $2 ... or $0.20? "To eat real actual meat without causing all of this harm to animals is what real clean meat is." Fast forward to the end ... "it was an out of body experience to sit there eating a chicken but then having the chicken that you are eating running around in front of you [because you didn't have to kill it]. You don't imagine doing something like that, but then you have the realization that you figured out how life really works and you don't have to cause death to create food and we will have to do it to continue living on this planet." This is fascinating, ending world hunger while slashing global emissions and stopping the destruction of rain forests ... all with one process/product?!? Wow. How does it relate to shopping centers? Population growth. Having higher access to healthy foods will cause populations to be healthy and to grow. Population growth drives tenant sales which drives retail rents. https://lnkd.in/e4dYZjep
