La Petra appears to us in its original state, an obsolete dwelling located in a building between party walls in the Gràcia neighborhood. After freeing it from the existing partitions, the strategy is to generate a new independent box that acts as a distributor element, segregating the different uses of the dwelling, while containing the kitchen, the main bathroom, and the storage space. This box allows the space to be read as a unit, while also having the capacity to visually segregate it according to the situations. We designed this ceiling as a unique walkthrough experience for anyone entering the house through its gate. The challenge was to reimagine the possibilities for a porch ceiling and flooring in a space primarily meant for car parking, where planters, landscaping, or wall lights couldn’t be accommodated. Our solution? A stunning starry ceiling crafted with recessed level bands as grooves in the false ceiling. The intersections of these bands are set at an even lower depth, creating a sense of dimension and depth where small modular lights are embedded, producing a mesmerizing starry effect. This design is chic and minimal, exuding a luxurious yet practical aesthetic. Unlike traditional coves or ambient lighting, which can be challenging to maintain in a household, this approach prioritizes both elegance and ease of upkeep—perfect for everyday living.
