THE "TRANSFORMATION" It was during the pandemic when the Top-3 management consultancies (McKinsey, BCG, Bain ... the MBB) got a lot of attention due to the forced adaptation that many companies had to go through. What was the MBB pill to cure such challenge? "Transformation"! No wonder that a post-pandemic survey of 702 executive staff and project managers found that of those who worked with the three biggest consultancies in "corporate transformation" projects, 84% felt they “were no help at all”. The Times: Big three consultancies ‘rarely worth hiring’, say executives https://lnkd.in/d5AecTsX Then, if you ask yourself the question "What's the difference between Strategy and Transformation?", I bet that you won't have a straigt and clear answer. Furthermore, all three firms are downsizing in the post-pandemic era. So, what is going on with them? Are they turning now to "Digital & AI Strategy", or to other similar invention, to get their bills paid? Also read: MICRO-CONSULTING https://lnkd.in/dyPUDzNg MICRO-CONSULTING ... What's the difference between Strategy and Transformation? Firstly, I am no expert, but an enthusiastic learner, and find your posts stimulating - and at times very challenging (you have the amazing ability to call out the snake oil salespeople). The question posed in your recent post above is no exception, but I cannot resist the temptation to learn. My response: The question can be considered as a trap. Both Strategy and Transformation are the same thing, or more precisely: an effective strategy (that has an Impact) needs no transformation, and those that aren't do. This leads to considering another recent post about Metrics and KPI's. Metrics can be used to determine whether a plan has been executed well, whereas a KPI can determine whether any plan will create the extended Impact. In summary, I would suggest that a strategy creates an impact, and anything short of that is just a strategic plan - in need of transformation. Hopefully, you'll see these comments as a product of curiosity about your work, and the opportunity to learn.

Why do they continue to get hired? is the question that comes to mind. Perhaps the senior folks in the organisations that procure these services either do not understand what is required to generate and implement the necessary change, and or have little faith in their own organisational capabilities to do so?

Post-pandemic transformation often failed. MBB expertise lacks impact. Rethinking needed. Mihai Ionescu
